Utah Electrician License Renewal (DOPL)

Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read

Every Utah electrician license (apprentice, journeyman, master, residential journeyman and residential master) is due for renewal on November 30 of even years, with renewal dates of November 30, 2026 and November 30, 2028. Renewing takes 16 hours of continuing education: 8 on the National Electrical Code, 4 on NFPA 70E and 4 more core or professional hours. You renew online in My License One. A license that isn't renewed by its expiration date expires, and working on it after that is unlawful.

At a glance

Who renews
Every electrician license Utah's Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) issues: apprentice, journeyman, master, residential journeyman and residential master electricians
Expires
November 30 of even years, for every electrician license classification. That makes the renewal dates November 30, 2026 and November 30, 2028
Renewal notice
DOPL emails a renewal notice to the address on file before the license expires (its electrical page says 90 days before). You can't renew before the renewal cycle opens
Renew
Online in My License One, signing in with your UtahID and finding your license (if it isn't listed already) with the details in your renewal notice. DOPL says it works best on a computer rather than a phone
Continuing education
16 hours of approved CE each two-year cycle, apprentices included. At least 12 must be core: 8 hours on the National Electrical Code and 4 hours on NFPA 70E. The other 4 can be core or professional
Professional CE
OSHA or MSHA safety, electrical motors and motor controls, electrical tool usage, or supervision skills related to the electrical trade
CE proof
DOPL's CE registry lists approved courses and the hours recorded on your license. Keep your certificates too: not providing proof of completed CE within 30 days of DOPL's request is unprofessional conduct
Fee
$78 to renew any electrician classification, on DOPL's current fee schedule. The schedule also lists surcharges for electricians, such as a $5 Electrician Education and Enforcement Fund fee
Renewing late
Up to 30 days after expiration: the renewal fee plus a $20 late fee. 31 days to 2 years after: the renewal fee plus a $50 reinstatement fee. More than 2 years: you generally apply again as a new applicant. DOPL's rules make narrow exceptions, so check with DOPL if one may apply to you
Working expired
Practicing after your license has expired is unlawful conduct and a criminal offense, and DOPL can discipline you for that time even after you renew
Contractors
An electrical contractor license is separate and expires November 30 of odd years. Renewing it takes 6 hours of contractor CE, an active liability insurance certificate, and workers' compensation coverage, a contract with an approved professional employer organization, or a waiver from the Utah Labor Commission

Tell DOPL about a change of address or email within 10 business days, or the renewal notice goes to the old one.

From January 1, 2027, H.B. 40 (2026) moves Utah's electrician licensing law into new sections. It keeps the two-year license term and the 16 CE hours.

How to renew

  1. Make sure DOPL has your current email address, and watch for its renewal notice email.
  2. Finish 16 hours of approved CE: 8 on the National Electrical Code, 4 on NFPA 70E and 4 more core or professional. Check the hours recorded on your license and keep the certificates.
  3. Sign in to My License One with your UtahID, find your license (with the renewal notice's details if it isn't listed), and renew it online.
  4. Pay the $78 renewal fee by November 30. Renewing after that adds a $20 late fee, or a $50 reinstatement fee after 30 days.

Put this renewal in your calendar

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • Your electrical contractor license, on November 30 of odd years
  • The liability insurance and workers' comp (or waiver) you file with DOPL for the contractor license
  • Your apprentices' licenses: apprentice electricians renew on the same November 30 and need the same 16 CE hours
  • General liability insurance policy
  • Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
