Wyoming Electrician License Renewal

Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read

Wyoming master and journeyman electrician licenses from the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety (the State Fire Marshal's office) expire on a fixed date: a master license expires on July 1 and a journeyman license on January 1, in the third year after the year it was issued. To renew, finish 16 hours of approved training, at least 8 of them on the National Electrical Code, then apply in the State Fire Marshal's online portal and pay $100 (master) or $50 (journeyman). Within 45 days after the license expires you can still renew for $50 more; after that, you have to pass the exam again.

Who needs it
Electrical equipment in Wyoming is installed by licensed electrical contractors employing licensed master or journeyman electricians, or registered apprentices supervised by one, with exceptions such as work on your own property that isn't for immediate resale (W.S. 35-9-123). A master or journeyman electrician doing electrical work in Wyoming must be employed at all times by a licensed Wyoming electrical contractor
Expires
Master license: July 1 in the third year following the year of issue. Journeyman license: January 1 in the third year following the year of issue
Renewal window
For journeyman electricians, the renewal period opens 90 days before the expiration date: October 1 of the year before your license expires
Renewal fee
Master electrician $100; journeyman electrician $50. Card payments (Visa or MasterCard only) carry a 2.5% processing fee, at least $1.00
Continuing education
At least 16 hours of training in the National Electrical Code or in advances in the electrical industry, at least 8 of them specifically on the National Electrical Code, finished on or before the date your license expires. Courses must have prior Electrical Board approval: the State Fire Marshal lists approved CE providers and courses
Renew
Log in to the State Fire Marshal's eLicense public portal, open Applications and choose Apply Now on the Master Electrician Renewal or Journeyman Renewal, upload your CE certificates (unless you already have for this renewal period), and sign with your account password. After staff approve it you get an "available for payment" email: then check out and pay
Your license
Once you've paid, your license is emailed to you from noreply@imagetrend.com. Licenses are no longer mailed
Processing time
Depending on volume, a journeyman renewal can take up to 5 business days to process, and the master renewal's "available for payment" email can take 7 to 10 business days. Apply early
Grace period
45 days after the expiration date. Renewing in the grace period costs an extra $50 late fee on top of the renewal fee
After 45 days
You must pay all applicable fees and pass the appropriate exam again to get your license back. A journeyman is licensed again under the expired license number, for the $100 license fee plus testing fees, after a new exam application. A reciprocal license that lapses can't be reciprocated again

Master electricians: uploaded your CE early through the portal's "Outside of Renewal Upload" application? You still have to apply for, submit and sign the renewal application itself; you don't upload the CE again.

How to renew

  1. Check your license's expiration date: July 1 for a master license, January 1 for a journeyman license.
  2. Finish 16 hours of approved CE, at least 8 of them on the National Electrical Code, before the license expires.
  3. In the State Fire Marshal's eLicense portal, apply for the Master Electrician Renewal or Journeyman Renewal, upload your CE certificates and sign with your password.
  4. When the "available for payment" email arrives, check out and pay $100 (master) or $50 (journeyman) with Visa or MasterCard. Approval can take several business days before you can pay.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • Your Wyoming electrical contractor license, if you hold one: it expires on July 1 following the date of issue and renews for $400, with a master electrician of record
  • General liability insurance policy
  • Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
