Hawaii Electrician License Renewal

Last reviewed October 2026 · 5 min read

Every Hawaii electrician license from the Board of Electricians and Plumbers renews every three years by June 30, whenever it was issued: the 2026 renewal covered July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2029, so the next deadline is June 30, 2029. An on-time renewal cost $306 for an active license in 2026. Every active electrician except maintenance electricians must also show they completed the continuing competency requirement, a National Electrical Code update course, unless their new license was issued within one year of the expiration date. A license not renewed by June 30 is forfeited and you may not practice; you can restore it within one year ($406 for an active license in 2026), or it's terminated and you apply again as a new applicant.

At a glance

Renews every
3 years, by June 30: 2026, 2029, 2032. All electrician licenses renew together, whenever they were issued. The 2026 renewal covered July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2029, so the next deadline is June 30, 2029
Licenses
Journey worker (EJ), supervising (ES), journey worker and supervising industrial (EJI, ESI), journey worker and supervising specialty (EJS, ESS) and maintenance (EM) electrician licenses
Fee (2026 renewal)
$306 on time for any active electrician license, $12 for an inactive one
Continuing competency
Every active electrician except maintenance electricians (EM) must show they completed the continuing competency requirement, an update course on the National Electrical Code. For the July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026 period it was a course on the updates to the 2020 NEC; check the board for the course the 2029 renewal asks for
Proof of the course
Authorize Honolulu Community College or the Hawaii Electricians Training Fund to send the board your proof of completion, or send the board a copy of your completion certificate from either
Exemptions
A one-time exemption if your new license was issued within one year of the license expiration date. Inactive licenses aren't subject to the requirement
Renew
Online through MyPVL. For the 2026 renewal, the board mailed renewal postcards on May 1 and took renewals from May 4 to June 30. A renewal paid by mail isn't late if the U.S. Postal Service postmarks it before July 1
Not renewed by June 30
Not paying the renewal fees, or not meeting the continuing competency requirement, before the renewal date forfeits the license: you're unlicensed and may not practice. A check dishonored on first deposit counts as not paying
Restoring a forfeited license
Within one year from the date of forfeiture, file the board's form with the required documents, meet the continuing competency requirement and pay the renewal and penalty fees. In 2026 restoring cost $406 for an active license and $112 for an inactive one
Not restored in a year
The license is terminated and you file as a new applicant, meeting the current licensing requirements. The board may waive retaking the exam if it approves your good and valid reasons for missing the year
Inactive license
An inactive licensee counts as unlicensed and may not practice. To go inactive at renewal, ask for a paper renewal form; to come back, send the reactivation form with the required documents and fees

The board's FAQ says offering or contracting to do electrical work takes an electrical contractor's license, with one narrow exception for small jobs that need no permit (see the FAQ). Contractor licenses come from the Contractors License Board and renew on their own schedule.

Apprentices, helpers and other unlicensed people may do electrical work only under the supervision of a licensed journey worker or supervising electrician who oversees the work and is physically present at the project site the whole time.

The board's FAQ says permits and the electrical code are up to the county building departments (Honolulu, Hawaii, Maui and Kauai).

How to renew

  1. Check your renewal year: electrician licenses renew by June 30 every 3 years (2026, 2029, 2032), so the next deadline is June 30, 2029.
  2. Unless you're a maintenance electrician, your license is inactive, or your new license was issued within a year of the expiration date, take the NEC update course the board asks for, and authorize Honolulu Community College or the Hawaii Electricians Training Fund to send the board your proof (or keep your certificate to send yourself).
  3. Watch for the renewal postcard (in 2026 it went out May 1) and renew online through MyPVL by June 30. If you mail it, the U.S. Postal Service postmark must be before July 1.
  4. Missed it? Stop work: the license is forfeited. Restore it within one year with the board's form, your course proof and the renewal and penalty fees, or you file as a new applicant.

Put this renewal in your calendar

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • Your electrical contractor license from the Contractors License Board, if you contract for work (it renews on its own schedule)
  • General liability insurance policy
  • Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
