Alabama Electrical License Renewal (Contractor & Journeyman)
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
Alabama electrical contractor and journeyman electrician licenses are issued by the Alabama Board of Electrical Contractors and expire every year. Renewal costs $150 for an electrical contractor and $35 for a journeyman, online or with the board's annual renewal form. Electrical contractors need 14 hours of continuing education every two years, and the board says 2027 is a CE year. A license not renewed by 11:59 pm on its expiration date is expired, and journeyman licenses can't be renewed late.
At a glance
- Who needs it
- Anyone in the electrical contracting business or working as a master or journeyman electrician, with a license from the board or from the county or city where the work is done. Some work, and some employees of licensed contractors, are exempt. Journeyman electricians work under a master or state certified electrical contractor
- Renews every
- Year: all licenses expire annually. Check the expiration date on your own license
- Renew
- Online through the board's online renewals, or with the board's annual renewal form. The board no longer accepts personal or business checks, and card payments carry a 4% convenience fee
- Fee
- $150 for an electrical contractor, $35 for a journeyman electrician
- Deadline
- A contractor or journeyman who hasn't renewed by 11:59 pm on the date of expiration is immediately considered expired
- Late renewal
- Contractor renewals received after the last day of the month the license was to be renewed add a $50 late fee. Journeyman electrician licenses can't be renewed late
- Expired contractor license
- Can only be restored within five years of expiration, with the restoration fee, all accrued renewal fees and all the continuing education owed. After five years you have to pass the written exam again and apply as a new applicant
- Continuing education
- Electrical contractors: 14 hours every two years, not required for the first year a contractor holds a certification. The board says 2027 is a CE year: contractors need 14 hours before their 2027 renewal
- Reporting CE
- Since May 2026 your CE provider reports your hours through the board's CE provider portal: the board no longer accepts completion certificates from contractors for hours taken after May 1, 2026
- Inactive contractor
- An inactive contractor can't buy local licenses or permits until returning to active status
The expiration date: the board's rules say licenses are renewed before the last day of the quarter they were issued in, while its renewal form counts the late fee from the month the license was due. Go by the date on your license.
Inactive certificates: the board's fee rule and its change of status form give different fees for a journeyman going inactive, so ask the board before you switch.
Expired journeyman licenses: the board's sources say they can't be renewed late but not how one is restored. Call the board at (334) 679-1020.
How to renew
- Check the expiration date on your license: it renews every year, and it's expired at 11:59 pm on that date.
- Contractors: if it's a CE year (2027 is), make sure your provider has reported your 14 hours through the board's CE provider portal.
- Renew online through the board's online renewals, or send the annual renewal form: $150 for a contractor, $35 for a journeyman. No personal or business checks, and cards carry a 4% fee.
- Contractors who miss the month their license was due pay a $50 late fee. Journeyman licenses can't be renewed late, so renew on time.
- Check your county or city building permit and business license too: a statewide license still needs them to work there.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Local business licenses and building permits in each county or city you work in
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
