Florida Electrical Contractor License Renewal (ECLB)

Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read

Florida electrical contractor licenses, certified and registered, renew every two years on August 31 of even-numbered years. Electrical contractors need 11 hours of continuing education each cycle, set by topic, and no more than 4 of them can be home study. The requirement dropped from 14 to 11 hours in 2020, so older guides showing 14 are out of date.

At a glance

Deadline
August 31 of even-numbered years, for certified and registered electrical contractors. Next: August 31, 2028
Renewal notice
DBPR emails you when the renewal period opens, 90 to 120 days before the expiration date. Keep your email address current with DBPR
Continuing education
11 hours for certified and registered electrical contractors: 1 hour each of business practices, workers' compensation, workplace safety, and Florida laws and rules, plus 7 technical hours, one of them a Florida Building Code specialized or advanced module course
Alarm work
Electrical contractors engaged in alarm system contracting also need 2 hours of false alarm prevention
Home study
No more than 4 of your hours can come from home study courses, and each needs a passing score of at least 75%
First renewal
No CE if you were licensed less than 12 months before the end of your first two-year period. Licensed 12 months or more before it, you owe 5 hours: 1 hour each of business, workers' compensation, workplace safety, and laws and rules, plus 1 more (false alarm prevention if you do alarm contracting)
More than one license
You complete the CE once per two-year period, not once per license, and a course counts only once per period
Alarm and specialty licenses
Alarm system and specialty contractor licenses need 7 hours instead of 11
Changed in 2020
The requirement dropped from 14 to 11 hours in 2020, so older guides showing 14 hours are out of date for regular renewals
Fee
$296 for a certified electrical contractor, $121 for a registered one
Renew
Online through your DBPR account once the renewal period opens
Insurance
By applying for renewal, you certify that you have kept the required public liability and property damage insurance in force: at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per occurrence of liability plus $500,000 of property damage, or an $800,000 combined single limit policy. You also need workers' compensation coverage or an exemption
Missed the deadline
The license becomes delinquent, and you may practice only with an active license. Renewing after August 31 adds a $25 delinquency fee; DBPR charges more to renew a license still delinquent later in the next cycle
Void
A delinquent license that isn't renewed (active or inactive) by the end of the next two-year cycle becomes void
Reactivating
Reactivating an inactive license takes the same 11 hours (with each required topic), completed within the 2 years before you reactivate

A registered electrical contractor may contract only in the cities or counties the registration covers, and can't contract for alarm systems.

How to renew

  1. Confirm your license's renewal date (August 31 of an even-numbered year) in your DBPR account.
  2. Complete your 11 CE hours across the required topics with a DBPR-approved provider, no more than 4 of them home study. Doing alarm work? Add 2 hours of false alarm prevention.
  3. Make sure your liability, property damage and workers' comp coverage is in force: you certify it when you renew.
  4. Renew online and pay the fee ($296 certified, $121 registered) before August 31.

Put this renewal in your calendar

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • The liability and property damage insurance you certify at renewal
  • General liability insurance policy
  • Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
