West Virginia Electrician License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
West Virginia master, journeyman and specialty electrician licenses from the State Fire Marshal all expire on June 30 each year. The State Fire Marshal renews them annually, or for up to three years at a time, for $50 per year, and it's your responsibility to send in the renewal request: renewals can be made in the State Fire Marshal's Online License Portal. A license not renewed on time may be renewed within the licensure year with a $50 penalty fee on top of the $50 license fee, but no one may do electrical work while their license is expired. Neither the law nor the rule sets any continuing education for renewal.
At a glance
- Who needs it
- Anyone who performs, offers or engages in electrical work for compensation or hire in West Virginia, unless an exemption in W. Va. Code 29-3B-3 applies (see the notes). A person assisting a journeyman or master electrician doesn't need a license for that supervised work. A firm's or corporation's electrician license doesn't exempt the electricians working for it from holding their own journeyman or master license
- License types
- Master, journeyman and specialty electrician licenses. Specialty licenses cover plumbing, heating and air conditioning (SP-PH), electric signs (SP-ES), single family residential dwellings (SP-SFD), low voltage fire and burglar alarm communication systems (SP-LV) and elevators (SP-EL)
- Expires
- June 30 each year: all electrician licenses issued by the State Fire Marshal expire on the 30th day of June
- Renewal fee
- $50 per year. The State Fire Marshal renews a license annually, or for up to a three year period
- Renew
- Through the State Fire Marshal's Online License Portal, which is open for applications and renewals of electrician licenses. It's your own responsibility to submit your renewal request. The State Fire Marshal doesn't pass on credit card fees for online payments
- Continuing education
- None. Neither the electrician licensing law (W. Va. Code 29-3B) nor the State Fire Marshal's Electrician Licensing Rules (103CSR5) sets a CE requirement for renewal
- Late renewal
- A license not renewed on time may be renewed within the licensure year by paying the $50.00 license fee and a $50.00 penalty fee
- While expired
- No person, firm or corporation may perform electrical work during the time their license is expired
- Not renewed?
- An electrician who didn't renew can renew without retesting within five years of the date of the last renewal, as long as the license wasn't revoked, by paying double the current fee
- Working unlicensed
- Electrical work without the required license brings a fine of $100 to $500 for a first offense, $500 to $1,000 for a second and $1,000 to $5,000 for a third or later. Each day the work goes on after official notice that it's unlawful is a separate offense
- On the job
- Post a copy of your license on each job site where electrical work is being performed for hire. A master or journeyman electrician may supervise no more than three assistant/helper electricians on the job site
- Temporary license
- A temporary master or journeyman license issued without examination is a one time, nonrenewable license for 90 days
- Contact
- Office of the State Fire Marshal, Regulatory and Licensing Division, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Charleston, WV 25302. 304-558-2191, sfmlicensing@wv.gov
Some electrical work needs no license, such as work on property you or your immediate family own or lease, work by an employee at the manufacturing plant or industrial establishment that employs them, and work by a government employee on government property: see W. Va. Code 29-3B-3 for the full list. Low voltage work (80 volts or less), with only low voltage wiring, needs only a specialty license.
Contracting for electrical jobs can also need a West Virginia contractor license from the Contractor Licensing Board, a separate license: W. Va. Code 30-42 requires one for work costing $5,000 or more (residential) or $25,000 or more (commercial). Check with the Board which jobs need one.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your West Virginia contractor license with the Contractor Licensing Board, if your business needs one: it expires one year from the date it was issued, on its own schedule
- Your electricians' licenses, one per person: each electrician on your crew renews their own
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
