Iowa Electrician License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 5 min read
Iowa electrical licenses from the Electrical Examining Board run three years, except apprentice and unclassified licenses, which run one year. The last three-year licenses all expired on December 31, 2025, and the current cycle is 2026-2028. Masters, journeymen, residential masters and residential electricians need 18 hours of board-approved CE, 6 of them on the National Electrical Code. A late renewal adds 10% of the fee for each month or part of a month, and only for three months: after that you apply for a new license.

- Renews every
- 3 years for electrical contractor, residential electrical contractor, master (Class A or B), residential master, journeyman (Class A or B), residential electrician, special electrician and inactive master licenses. - Continuing education
- 18 hours of board-approved CE during the three-year license, at least 6 of them on the National Electrical Code, to renew a master (Class A or B), journeyman (Class A or B), residential master or residential electrician license. A license issued for less than three years needs 6 hours for each year or part of a year it was held. A contact hour is 50 minutes of classroom attendance
- CE deadline
- Within the license period: for the 2023-2025 licenses, DIAL's renewal form required every hour by December 31, 2025
- Fee
- $375 for an electrical contractor, residential electrical contractor, master (Class A or B) or residential master license; $75 for a journeyman (Class A or B), residential electrician, special electrician or inactive master license; $20 for an apprentice or unclassified license
- Late renewal
- Up to three months after expiration, adding 10% of the renewal fee for each month or part of a month. A $375 renewal becomes $412.50, $450 or $487.50; a $75 one becomes $82.50, $90 or $97.50; a $20 one becomes $22, $24 or $26
- Contractor insurance
- Electrical contractors, and electricians who contract work themselves without working for a licensed electrical contractor, must keep at least $1 million of general and complete operations liability insurance in force at all times. The renewal form asks for the insurance expiration date and the DIAL contractor registration number and expiration date
- Renew
- Online at iowaelectrical.gov (Electrical Licensing System, then "Submit new Application or Renew Existing License"), or by mail with DIAL's renewal form and a check or money order payable to the Iowa Electrical Examining Board. No cash. The last form had to be postmarked by December 31, 2025
- After three months
- An expired license can no longer be renewed: you apply for a new license, and DIAL's renewal form says that means passing the state-sponsored exam
CE only counts if it is a board-approved course from an approved instructor. Approved classes are listed under "Course Search" at iowaelectrical.gov, and the instructor must send the class roster to the board within 30 days of the course.
A master electrician due for renewal can take an inactive master license instead ($75). You must keep meeting the active license's requirements, CE included, and you can't do work that needs the master license while it is inactive. DIAL's renewal form says to also apply for a journeyman license if you want to keep working as an electrician.
Insurers must notify the board 30 days before cancelling or reducing the required coverage, and the license holder must stop work immediately if it lapses.
How to renew
- Take 18 hours of board-approved CE during your three-year license, at least 6 on the National Electrical Code, and keep every certificate.
- Check your hours are on file: log in at iowaelectrical.gov, open "My Licenses" and click your license number.
- Renew online at iowaelectrical.gov before your license expires: $375 for contractor and master licenses, $75 for journeyman, residential electrician, special electrician and inactive master licenses.
- Contractors: have your $1 million liability insurance and DIAL contractor registration current, because the renewal form asks for both expiration dates.
- Missed the date? You have three months, at 10% of the fee per month. After that, you apply for a new license.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your DIAL contractor registration (the renewal form asks for its expiration date)
- Your apprentices' and unclassified workers' one-year licenses
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
