Oklahoma Electrician License Renewal (CIB)
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
Oklahoma electrical journeyman and contractor licenses are issued by the Construction Industries Board (CIB) and last no more than a year: every license expires on the last day of the licensee's birth month. A late fee applies 30 days after expiration, and most journeymen and contractors need 12 hours of approved continuing education in the 36 months before the license expires to renew. An active contractor also keeps a $5,000 bond, $50,000 of liability insurance and workers' compensation proof on file, or the license goes inactive.

- Year: a license lasts no longer than one year and expires on the last day of your birth month
- Renew
- Send the CIB's renewal application with a check or money order, or pay through the CIB's online payment portal and still send in the application. Renewal opens 30 days before the due date
- Fee
- $200 for a contractor (active or inactive), $75 for a journeyman. Renewing an alarm endorsement adds $25
- Late renewal
- A late fee is effective 30 days after expiration: $300 in total for a contractor, $100 for a journeyman. Once the CE is done, a license can be renewed up to a year from the original renewal date
- Continuing education
- 12 hours every 36 months: no journeyman or contractor license is renewed without 12 hours of committee-approved CE in the 36 months before the license expires, 6 of them on the codes adopted by the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission. You're exempt for 3 years from the date you passed your current licensing exam
- Bond
- Active contractors: a continuous $5,000 license bond filed with the CIB, with a 30-day cancellation notice
- Insurance
- Active contractors: general liability of at least $50,000 combined single limit for bodily injury and property damage, with the Construction Industries Board listed as certificate holder. Each new or renewed policy has to be reported to the CIB
- Workers' compensation
- Active contractors provide proof of a workers' compensation policy, or an exemption, with the renewal
- Lapsed coverage
- Without a current bond, insurance and workers' compensation certificate, the contractor license is issued as inactive until the requirements are met
- Inactive contractor
- Same renewal fee as an active contractor, but no bond, insurance or workers' compensation; you can work as a journeyman electrician but not offer services as an electrical contractor
- Fines
- A license can't be renewed until any outstanding CIB fines are paid
The CIB's 2027 rule notice says Senate Bill 1732 raises its fees from July 1, 2028, with a contractor renewal going from $200 to $320. Check the fee on the renewal form before you pay.
A license expired for more than a year: House Bill 3673 changes how it's reinstated, and the CIB's rules are being updated to match. Ask the CIB what applies to yours.
Only CE approved by the CIB's industry committee counts: courses from another state agency count only once the committee approves them.
How to renew
- Check your birth month: that's when your license expires, on the last day of the month.
- Finish 12 hours of CE approved by the CIB's electrical committee within the 36 months before expiration, 6 of them code update hours, unless you passed your current licensing exam less than 3 years ago.
- Contractors: make sure your $5,000 bond and $50,000 liability policy are current with the CIB, and have your workers' compensation proof or exemption ready.
- Send the renewal application with $200 (contractor) or $75 (journeyman), plus $25 if you renew an alarm endorsement. Paying online? Still send the application. 30 days after expiration the late fee applies.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your general liability policy: report each renewal to the CIB, and keep it current or the license goes inactive
- Your workers' compensation policy or exemption
- Your $5,000 license bond: it's continuous, but it can be cancelled on 30 days' notice
- Your apprentices' registrations, with 3 hours of CE a year before they re-register
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
