Utah Contractor License Renewal (DOPL)

Last reviewed October 2026 · 6 min read

Every Utah contractor license, general or specialty, renews with the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) on the same two-year cycle and expires on November 30 of odd-numbered years: next on November 30, 2027. Before you can renew online in My License One, you need 6 hours of approved continuing education posted to DOPL's CE registry (at least 3 core and at least 3 taught live), a liability insurance certificate of at least $1,000,000 per incident and $2,000,000 total naming DOPL as certificate holder, and workers' compensation coverage or a waiver. A license not renewed by its expiration date expires automatically.

At a glance

Expires
November 30 of odd-numbered years, for every contractor license. Next: November 30, 2027
Renews every
Two years. Inactive licenses must be renewed every two years too
Renewal notice
DOPL emails renewal notices to the email address on file at least 60 days before the license expires, and says the reminder with your registration code goes out around September 1. Keep your email address current with DOPL
Renew
Online in My License One, signing in with a UtahID, on a desktop or laptop computer: DOPL says contractor renewals can't be completed on a mobile device. DOPL's rule requires online renewal unless DOPL permits otherwise in writing, though its renewal page also links a paper renewal/reinstatement form
Continuing education
6 hours of approved CE each two-year cycle. At least 3 must be core education (such as construction codes and laws, job site safety, OSHA 10 or 30 training, finance, bookkeeping, energy conservation and construction business practices); the rest can be core or professional. At least 3 hours must be live; DOPL says a live webinar counts, and no more than 3 hours can be online
CE before renewal
You can't renew until all 6 hours are completed and posted to DOPL's CE registry. Course providers post the hours, and DOPL can't add them for you: if any are missing, give the provider all your license numbers. Each course applies to all of your contracting licenses
HVAC contractors
At least 3 of the 6 hours must be directly related to installing, repairing or replacing heating, ventilation or air conditioning systems
Backflow installers
S330 and S410 contractors who install backflow preventer devices need at least 2 of the 6 hours on backflow installation
Liability insurance
An active general liability insurance certificate, as a PDF, with at least $1,000,000 of coverage for each incident and $2,000,000 in total, naming DOPL as certificate holder
Workers' compensation
With employees, or owner-workers owning less than 8%: a workers' compensation insurance certificate naming DOPL as certificate holder, plus your Utah Department of Workforce Services unemployment insurance and Utah State Tax Commission withholding registration numbers, or a signed contract with an approved professional employer organization (PEO). With no employees and no coverage on yourself: a Workers' Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission
Business entity
Make sure your business entity's registration with the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code is renewed. If a corporation's or LLC's registration expires, the contractor license expires automatically, whatever its expiration date
Fee
Set by DOPL's fee schedule: check the current amount there before you pay. Fees are non-refundable
Renewing late
Within 30 days after expiration: the renewal fee plus $20 for each license. 31 days to 2 years after: the renewal fee plus $50 for each license. Practicing after your license expires is unlawful
More than 2 years late
Contact DOPL. Its renewal form says you must submit a new application and meet current licensing requirements, while its renewal page points to a reinstatement application

Energy conservation: DOPL's current rule R156-55a-303b requires at least one of your 6 hours to be on energy conservation.

A 2026 law (H.B. 40) rewrites Utah's contractor licensing law from January 1, 2027. It keeps the 6 CE hours each two-year term and the 3 HVAC hours for HVAC contractors. Check DOPL's contracting CE page before you book courses for the 2027 renewal, in case its rules change.

Keep your CE certificates for two years after the end of the renewal period: DOPL can audit.

If your qualifier leaves, tell DOPL in writing within 10 days. The license then stays in force for 60 days: replace the qualifier within that time, or the license is suspended automatically.

An inactive license doesn't need liability insurance or financial responsibility, but it must still be renewed. Before using it again, reactivate it with proof of insurance, financial responsibility and CE.

How to renew

  1. Check your email around September 1 for DOPL's renewal reminder and registration code, and make sure the address DOPL has is current.
  2. Finish 6 hours of approved CE (at least 3 core and 3 live) and check they're posted in the "Courses Taken" box of DOPL's CE registry, linked from its contracting CE page.
  3. Ask your insurance agent for a PDF certificate of general liability insurance ($1,000,000 per incident, $2,000,000 total) naming DOPL as certificate holder, plus a workers' comp certificate (with your workforce services and withholding numbers, or PEO contract) or the Labor Commission waiver.
  4. Make sure your business entity's registration with the Division of Corporations and Commercial Code is renewed, and be ready for DOPL's questions about criminal history and financial standing.
  5. Renew in My License One on a computer before November 30 of the odd-numbered year, and pay the fee on DOPL's fee schedule.

Put this renewal in your calendar

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • Your business entity's registration with the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code, and any DBA
  • Your Workers' Compensation Coverage Waiver, if you have no employees
  • Your plumber or electrician license, if you hold one: they renew on their own cycles
  • General liability insurance policy
  • Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
