North Dakota Electrician License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
North Dakota electrician licenses are issued by the State Electrical Board for one year at a time. Master, Class B and power limited licenses expire every April 30, journeyman licenses every March 31, and renewals open on January 1. To renew, you need 8 hours of board-approved continuing education on file with the board, at least 4 of them on the electrical code. An expired license can be reinstated by paying a reinstatement fee equal to the annual fee, but three years or more without renewing means taking the exam again.

- How CE reaches the board

- Reinstating an expired license takes a reinstatement fee equal to the annual fee. If you don't renew for three years in a row or more, you have to take the exam again
- Contractor insurance
- A master, Class B or power limited electrician acting as a contractor gives the board proof of public liability insurance with limits of at least $500,000
- Apprentice registrations
- Apprentice and power limited apprentice registrations expire every January 31, and renew for $10
A business that contracts for electrical work also needs a North Dakota contractor license from the Secretary of State (N.D.C.C. chapter 43-07), renewed for each contractor year, which ends March 1.
Each licensee also reports their license and renewals to the city's electrical inspector, where the city has one.
How to renew
- Check your license class: master, Class B and power limited licenses expire April 30, journeyman licenses March 31.
- Take 8 hours of board-approved CE, at least 4 on the National Electrical Code, early enough for the provider's roster to reach the board (they have 15 days after the class). Look up the credits the board has on file before you renew.
- Contractors: make sure the board has proof of your liability insurance (at least $500,000).
- From January 1, renew online with your license number, the last four digits of your Social Security number and a credit card ($50 master or power limited, $40 Class B, $25 journeyman).
- Missed it? An expired license takes a reinstatement fee equal to the annual fee, and three years or more without renewing means re-examination.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Contracting electricians: your North Dakota contractor license from the Secretary of State
- Your apprentice electricians' registrations (every January 31)
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
