District of Columbia Electrician License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 7 min read
Every District of Columbia electrician license from the DC Board of Industrial Trades (apprentice, journeyman, master and electrical contractor) expires on November 30 of an odd-numbered year, whenever it was issued, so the next deadline is November 30, 2027. You renew online through DLCP (the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection) before the license expires. DLCP's fee schedule lists two-year renewals at $110 for an apprentice or journeyman, $155 for a master and $180 for a contractor, with a $50 late renewal fee; how long a late renewal stays open isn't settled in DC's rules, so ask DLCP. Contractors and their designated masters also keep surety bonds that must run to the same November 30.
At a glance
- Who needs it
- DC law defines an electrician as anyone who designs, installs, maintains, alters, converts, changes, repairs, removes or inspects electrical wiring, equipment, conductors or systems in DC buildings or structures, or on public and private space (elevators and similar conveyances are licensed separately). DC's electrical regulations exempt some work, such as work in a home you own and live in (with the required permit) and replacing sockets, receptacles or switches. Unless licensed, nobody may call themselves an electrician, licensed electrician or master electrician in DC
- Licenses
- Journeyman and master electrician (regular and low voltage; low voltage is work at 49 volts and below), apprentice, and electrical contractor licenses for companies
- Renews every
- 2 years. Whenever it was obtained, every electrician license expires on November 30 of an odd-numbered year. Next: November 30, 2027
- Renewal notice
- DC law has DLCP mail a renewal notice by first class mail to your last known address at least 30 days before the license expires, or earlier if the rules say so, and DC's general licensing rules say at least 60 days. Not getting it doesn't relieve you of renewing on time
- Deadline
- Before the license expires: under DC law it can be renewed for another term before it expires if you apply on time, pay the renewal fee and meet the other requirements
- Renewal fee
- DLCP's fee schedule lists two-year renewals at $110 for an apprentice, $110 for a journeyman (all types), $155 for a master (all types) and $180 for a contractor (all types). Fees aren't refundable, even if you withdraw the application
- Late renewal fee
- DLCP's fee schedule lists a $50 late renewal fee. How long you can still renew late isn't settled: DC's general licensing rules allow a late renewal within 60 days after expiration, after which you must apply for reinstatement, while the older electrical regulations set different terms. Ask DLCP which applies before you count on it
- Continuing education
- DC law lets the Board set continuing education as a condition of renewal, and a renewal must show you met any it has set. None of DLCP's electrician pages we checked names any hours: ask DLCP before you renew whether any apply to your license
- Renew
- Online through DLCP's renewal application for occupational and professional licenses; DLCP's online services sign in through a free Access DC account. A company's point of contact can renew and pay on a licensee's behalf. DLCP asks every occupational licensee for a photo and recommends uploading a recent one with the renewal. Licenses are sent by email
- Bonds
- An electrical contractor needs a surety bond for the company and one for its designated master: $4,000 and $2,000 for regular voltage, $2,000 and $1,000 for low voltage. The bonds must expire with the license, on November 30 of an odd year, so renew them with it
- Designated master
- A contractor license needs a designated DC-licensed master electrician, who supervises the work and confirms the designation from their own account. Under DC's electrical licensing regulations, if the master leaves or their license expires, the company must immediately secure a qualified, licensed replacement
- If it expires
- Don't work on an expired license. DC law reinstates a license if you apply within 5 years after it expired, meet the current renewal requirements, pay the reinstatement fee and meet the Board's reinstatement requirements, which under DC's rules include showing you're fit to resume practice (DLCP lists $110 for an apprentice or electrician, $155 for a master and $180 for a contractor). After 5 years you apply as a new applicant. DLCP's form is the Industrial Trades Reinstatement Application
- Inactive status
- You can ask to go inactive (DLCP lists $110 for a journeyman and $155 for a master). You pay no renewal fee and may not practice while inactive. Under 5 years inactive you can come back by paying the fee and meeting the current renewal requirements; after 5 years you're treated as a new applicant unless the Board finds reasonable cause or excusable neglect
- Display
- DC law asks every licensee to display the license conspicuously, or keep it on file, at each place of business or employment, and to tell DLCP of a change of home, business or employment address. DC's electrical regulations ask contractors to display theirs framed under glass at the licensed location, and licensees to carry a card license on them

DLCP says journeyman and master electricians licensed by examination in Maryland or Virginia are eligible for a DC license by reciprocity, with a letter of good standing or license verification from that state (its instructions list Virginia only for journeymen): check with DLCP.
DC's plumbers and gasfitters (March 31 of even years) and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics (September 30 of even years) renew with the same Board on their own dates.
How to renew
- Check your license expires November 30, 2027 (every DC electrician license expires November 30 of an odd year). Watch for DLCP's renewal notice, and keep your address current with DLCP so it reaches you.
- Ask DLCP whether any continuing education applies to your license this cycle: none of its electrician pages names any hours.
- Contractors: renew the company's and the designated master's surety bonds so they run to the same November 30, and confirm your designated master's license is current too.
- Renew online through DLCP before November 30, upload a recent photo, and pay $155 for a master, $110 for a journeyman or apprentice or $180 for a contractor.
- Missed it? Stop electrical work and ask DLCP right away whether you can still renew with the $50 late fee (DC's general licensing rules allow 60 days) or must file the Industrial Trades Reinstatement Application. DC law allows reinstatement within 5 years after the license expired; after that you start over as a new applicant.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your company's and designated master's electrical bonds, which must expire with the license on November 30 of an odd year
- Your apprentices' licenses, which expire on the same November 30
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
