Vermont Electrician License Renewal

Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read

Vermont master, journeyman and type-S journeyman electrician licenses from the Vermont Electricians' Licensing Board are valid for three years and expire on the last day of a month the Board designates. To renew, send the signed renewal application, your continuing education certification and the fee before the license expires: 15 hours on the National Electrical Code for master and journeyman electricians, 8 hours on your specialty for a type-S journeyman, plus the Vermont Energy Goals education module. A lapsed license can be renewed within a year of its expiration date for $25 more; after that, you apply for a new license.

  1. Check your license's expiration date: licenses run three years and end on the last day of a month.
  2. Finish your continuing education in Board-approved seminars or courses (15 hours on the NEC, or 8 hours on your specialty for a type-S license; more than one type-S field can change that) and the Vermont Energy Goals module.
  3. Renew online through the Division's Online Renewal link, or send the signed renewal application with your CE certification, energy module certificate, child support and tax certifications.
  4. Pay the three-year fee ($150 master, $115 journeyman, $115 per type-S field) before your license expires.

Put this renewal in your calendar

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • Your Vermont plumbing license, if you also hold one (licensed separately through the Division of Fire Safety)
  • General liability insurance policy
  • Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
