Nebraska Electrician License Renewal
Last reviewed November 2026 · 6 min read
Every electrical license and apprentice registration the Nebraska State Electrical Board issues expires on December 31 of even-numbered years, so the 2025-2026 ones all expire on December 31, 2026. Renew from October 1 to November 30 of the even-numbered year (by November 30, 2026 this cycle) at the regular fee: $375 for contractor and master licenses, $75 for journeyman, wireman, fire alarm installer and special licenses, $70 for an apprentice registration. From December 1 to December 31 a 10% late fee is added, and there is no grace period after December 31: an expired license can't be renewed, and you apply for a new one. Renew online on the Division's licensing portal, where your 12 hours of board-approved continuing education (at least 6 on the National Electrical Code) must already be on file, or by mail. Apprentices need no CE to renew.

- Who it covers
- Electrical contractor, Class A master, Class B electrical contractor, journeyman electrician, Class B journeyman, residential journeyman wireman, fire alarm installer and special electrician licenses, and apprentice registrations
- Continuing education
- 12 contact hours of board-approved courses, at least 6 of them on the National Electrical Code, to renew any license. Apprentice registrations need no CE to renew, but without it the board adds to the experience an apprentice needs before the exam
- Fee
- For the 2027-2028 license: $375 for an electrical contractor, Class A master or Class B electrical contractor license; $75 for a journeyman, residential journeyman wireman, Class B journeyman, fire alarm installer or special license; $70 for an apprentice registration
- Renewal notice
- Emailed on August 1 and September 1 of even-numbered years to the last email address on file, only as a courtesy
- Regular renewal
- October 1 to November 30 of the even-numbered year
- This cycle
- Regular renewal October 1 to November 30, 2026; late renewal December 1 to December 31, 2026; the 2025-2026 licenses and registrations expire December 31, 2026, with no grace period
- Late renewal
- December 1 to December 31, with a 10% late fee added to the renewal fee
- Renew
- Online on the Division's licensing portal (create an account and link your license first), where your CE hours must be on file before the application goes through, or by mail with the renewal form, copies of your CE certificates and the fee
- Online, step by step
- Log in to the Division's licensing and permitting portal, open the My Credentials tile, click the arrow next to the license you're renewing, then Apply next to its renewal. A license other than an apprentice registration can't move through the application until 12 CE hours are loaded on your file. Update your address, phone or email in the application if they changed, and after paying click Continue at the very end to finish. To check it went through, open the license again under My Credentials: its Summary tab shows the new expiration date
- Linking your license
- Renewing online starts with an account on the portal and your license linked to it. If linking fails, enter your name as it shows on your license card and your full Social Security number, and your license number as its prefix, one space and five digits, with zeros added in front of a shorter number (for example JA 00000 or EC 00000). Help: (402) 471-3550
- By mail
- The 2026 renewal form, with copies of your CE certificates (not needed for an apprentice) and a check payable to the Nebraska State Electrical Division, to P.O. Box 95066, Lincoln, NE 68509-5066. The form asks for the last four digits of your Social Security number and a company name, and can't be used to upgrade a license: a higher class goes through the state exam
- After December 31
- No grace period. An expired license can't be renewed: you apply for a new license, and the Division's renewal form says you must pass the exam before it is issued. An expired apprentice registration needs a new registration, with no exam
Electrical contractor, Class B electrical contractor and Class A master license holders who own and run an electrical contracting firm must keep liability insurance in force (one license holder per firm is enough), and the board can refuse to renew a license when they don't.
A CE contact hour is 50 minutes in an approved class, and an instructor gives a certificate of attendance only if you attended at least 90% of the class hours.
Class A master, Class B electrical contractor and Class B journeyman licenses are no longer issued, but existing ones can still be renewed.
How to renew
- Take 12 hours of board-approved CE during the two-year cycle, at least 6 on the National Electrical Code, and keep each certificate of attendance.
- Create an account on the Division's new licensing portal and link your license to it (your name as on your license card, your full Social Security number, and the license prefix, a space and five digits).
- Renew between October 1 and November 30 of the even-numbered year (by November 30, 2026 this cycle) under My Credentials: $375 for contractor and master licenses, $75 for journeyman, wireman, fire alarm installer and special licenses, $70 for an apprentice registration.
- Check the license's Summary tab under My Credentials shows the new expiration date.
- Renewing December 1 to 31 adds a 10% late fee. After December 31 the license has expired and you must apply for a new one.

Put this renewal in your calendar
Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your apprentices' registrations (the same December 31)
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
