Arkansas Electrician License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
Arkansas electrician licenses (master, residential master, journeyman, residential journeyman, industrial maintenance and sign specialist among them) renew every year, on the date shown on the license. Masters and journeymen, residential ones included, also need 8 hours of National Electrical Code continuing education for each code cycle, finished in the cycle's first year. Renew late and you pay a year's fee again plus $10 a month; after 36 months you retake the exam and pay a $1,000 penalty.
At a glance
- Who needs it
- Anyone who performs electrical work in Arkansas, or advertises as an electrician, needs a license from the Arkansas Board of Electrical Examiners unless the law exempts them. The Board's Renew a License links cover master, residential master, journeyman, residential journeyman, industrial maintenance and sign specialist licenses
- Renews every
- Year. A license expires on the date shown on it, and the Board's rules set that at the last day of the month, one year after it was issued
- Fee
- $50 a year for a master or residential master electrician, $25 a year for a journeyman, residential journeyman, industrial maintenance or specialist sign electrician
- Renew
- Online, through the Renew a License link for your license class on the Department of Labor and Licensing's electrical licensing page
- Continuing education
- Master, residential master, journeyman and residential journeyman electricians complete at least 8 hours of continuing education for each National Electrical Code (NEC) cycle, in the first year of each new code cycle, before renewing. The hours cover the NEC and count only from Board-approved courses
- Missed CE
- If you haven't finished the hours by the end of the first year of a new NEC cycle, you can't renew until you finish them, send the Board proof, and pay all fees and penalties
- CE tracking
- The Board uses StateReporting.com: a free account shows your hours against the CE cycle and emails you when hours post and when your CE due date is near. The Board's page points to StateReporting.com for the list of Board-approved courses
- Renewing late
- Up to 36 months after the expiration date: the renewal fee, plus a late fee of one year's renewal fee and $10 for each calendar month since expiration, plus any unpaid civil penalty
- After 36 months
- You retake the license examination and pay an additional $1,000 penalty on top of the renewal fees. Ask the Board for your total
- Apprentices
- Apprentice registration costs $10 a year and expires on the last day of the month, one year after registration. The apprentice's school or training program, not the apprentice, applies for each renewal, with proof of current enrollment
Electrical inspectors who also hold a master or journeyman license may be exempt from its renewal fee and CE: check with the Board.
Restricted lifetime and temporary licenses have their own terms, not the yearly renewal here: check with the Board for yours.

Put this renewal in your calendar
Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.
The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar
The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your apprentices' registrations (yearly, renewed by their school or training program)
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
