North Carolina Electrical Contractor License Renewal (NCBEEC)
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
North Carolina electrical contractor licenses renew every year, one year from the date each license was issued, so there's no single statewide deadline. The renewal is due 30 days before the license expires, and the license's listed qualified individual has to finish their continuing education first.
At a glance
- Renewal due
- Renewal applications and fees are due 30 days before the license expires. The renewal period begins 60 days before the expiration date listed on your license. A renewal sent by mail counts as filed on the date it's postmarked
- Expires
- One year after the license was issued, on the expiration date shown on your license
- Renewal notice
- NCBEEC sends one about 60 days before expiration: by email if it has your address, otherwise a paper renewal form by mail
- Continuing education
- The listed qualified individual completes board-approved CE in the 12 months before renewal: 8 hours for Limited, Intermediate, Unlimited and SP-SFD licenses, 4 hours for the other special restricted licenses. At least half the hours must be in a classroom
- Extra CE hours
- Can be carried forward, up to two more years of the annual requirement
- New qualifiers
- Within 12 months after becoming a qualified individual (or in the 90 days before), a qualifier completes the Board's free, four-hour Laws and Rules Course, which counts for 4 of the hours needed for the first renewal of their qualification
- Fee
- $100 Limited, $150 Intermediate, $200 Unlimited, $100 for SP-SFD and the other special restricted licenses. G.S. 87-44 sets the annual license fee for each principal and each branch place of business
- Renew
- Online with the user ID and password from your renewal notice, or on the mailed renewal form. After an online renewal you print your own certificate: NCBEEC doesn't mail one
- Renewing late
- Renewals received after the expiration date pay a $25 late fee. A license not renewed by its expiration date is automatically revoked until it's renewed
- If it expired
- Within 12 months, you can still renew without a new exam. After 12 months, reactivating takes proof of 500 hours of primary experience in the most recent 12 months, plus current fees, the late fee and the CE requirement. Otherwise you apply for a new license
- Working unlicensed
- Electrical contracting without a license is a Class 2 misdemeanor. The Board can also assess a licensee or qualified individual a civil penalty of up to $1,000 for a violation
- Display
- Display a current certificate of license in your principal place of business and in each branch place of business
Changing the company name on a license means it's reissued, which changes its expiration and renewal dates.
How to renew
- Check the expiration date on your license and count back 30 days: that's when the renewal is due.
- Make sure the qualified individual's CE is finished and on file: look them up in NCBEEC's CE credit search, where "Has CE Hours Needed for Renewal" has to read True before you can renew.
- Renew online (or mail the renewal form) and pay the fee for your license class.
- After an online renewal, print your new certificate from the link shown after payment.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Carried-forward CE hours (they only count toward the next one or two license periods)
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
