Oregon Electrician License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 5 min read
Oregon electrician licenses from the Building Codes Division (BCD) run on a three-year cycle, and most licenses of one type expire on the same date: the next one is Oct. 1, 2027 for general journeyman and limited residential electricians and Oct. 1, 2028 for general and limited supervising electricians. A general journeyman or general supervising electrician renews for $100 with 24 hours of approved CE, including code change hours and a 4-hour Oregon rule and law course. Miss the date and you can't work under the license; within one year you can reapply without retesting, after that you retest.

- Three years. Most licenses of one type expire on the same date, so a first license can be short; the expiration date is printed on your license
- Next renewal: journeyman and supervising
- Oct. 1, 2027 for general journeyman (J) and limited residential (LR) licenses. Oct. 1, 2028 for general supervising (S) and limited supervising (PS) licenses

- Fee
- $100 for a three-year general journeyman or general supervising electrician license. $50 for a three-year Class A or Class B limited energy technician or limited journeyman sign electrician license
- CE: supervising electricians
- 24 hours each three-year cycle for a general supervising (S) or limited supervising (PS) electrician: 12 hours of code change, 8 code related and a 4-hour Oregon rule and law course
- CE: journeyman electricians
- 24 hours each three-year cycle for a general journeyman (J) electrician: 8 hours of code change, 12 code related and a 4-hour Oregon rule and law course. 16 hours for a limited residential (LR) or limited journeyman manufacturing plant (PJ) electrician: 8 code change, 4 code related and 4 Oregon rule and law
- CE: limited licenses
- 8 hours for a limited maintenance electrician (2 code change, 6 code related), a Class A limited energy technician (8 code change) or a Class B limited energy technician (2 code change, 6 code related). 4 hours for a limited renewable energy technician or limited journeyman sign electrician (2 code change, 2 code related). For these licenses, the code change hours include Oregon rule and law material. Limited building maintenance, limited elevator journeyman, limited stage and limited maintenance manufactured structures electricians need none
- Code change hours
- Part of your hours must be code change courses: you haven't met the requirement without the right number of them, whatever your total
- Approved courses
- Only approved courses and providers count. Providers report your hours to BCD, and your CE must be in BCD's system before you can renew: check it in the License Holder Search. You report First Aid/CPR (a live, hands-on course), OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 credits yourself, by emailing proof and your license number to bcd.ce@dcbs.oregon.gov
- First renewal
- No CE if your license was issued within 6 months of its expiration date. Within 12 months: the lesser of 8 hours or your license's requirement. Within 24 months: the lesser of 16 hours or your license's requirement. New licensees don't need a code change course
- Renew
- Online through BCD's license system (ordcbs.mylicense.com), on or before the expiration date: complete the renewal, finish all your CE and pay the fee. BCD mails a renewal notice to the address it has for you, and keeping that address current is your responsibility
- After expiration
- You can't work under an expired license until every renewal requirement, CE included, is met. Within one year of expiration you can reapply, pay the renewal fee and finish the CE you owed. After one year you apply again and retake the exam
- Extensions
- BCD or its board may extend the time to finish CE or renew for hardship or illness (a written request), never for not paying the fee or a renewal application that was lost or never arrived; and for military duty of 60 days or more (a written request with your orders)
CE classes can be taken any time during the three-year cycle, so there's no need to leave them for the last few weeks.
BCD sets CE hours and next renewal dates by license type: if you hold more than one BCD license, check each one.
How to renew
- Check the expiration date printed on your license, or BCD's next renewal date for your license type.
- Look up your CE in the License Holder Search and finish the hours you're missing with approved courses, code change hours and the Oregon rule and law course included. Give providers time to report them.
- Renew online through BCD's license system and pay the fee on or before the expiration date.
- If you missed it, stop work under the license and reapply within one year to avoid retaking the exam.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your business's electrical contractor license, if you hold one
- Your Construction Contractors Board (CCB) license, if you hold one
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
