Idaho Electrician License Renewal (DOPL)
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
Idaho electrical licenses are issued by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) for the Idaho Electrical Board. Master, journeyman and residential electrician licenses last three years and expire three years from your birthday. No continuing education is required to renew: the Legislature removed it when it approved the board's current rules in 2025. Electrical contractors show $300,000 of liability insurance, and workers' compensation where it applies, every time they renew. From October 30, 2026 DOPL moves the board's licenses that run shorter than two years to a two-year cycle.
At a glance
- Who needs it
- Electrical contractors and limited electrical contractors, and master, journeyman and residential electricians. A master electrician may also work as a journeyman or residential electrician and doesn't need a separate journeyman license. Apprentices register with DOPL instead
- Renews every
- 3 years for master, journeyman and residential electricians: the license expires three years from your birthday
- Two-year transition
- From October 30, 2026 DOPL moves the Electrical Board's licenses that run shorter than two years, apprentice registrations included, to a two-year cycle, and their renewal fee doubles once they move. Licenses that already run two years or longer, like the 3-year master and journeyman licenses, are unaffected
- Renew
- Online through DOPL's online services (Apply for or Renew a License on the Electrical Board page)
- Fee
- $45 to renew a master or journeyman license
- Before you can renew
- All outstanding civil penalties and permit or other fees paid in full, and all outstanding correction notices resolved
- Late renewal
- An expired license can be revived within one year from the last day of the final month of the licensing period by paying the revival (reinstatement) fee, $55 for a master or journeyman license, along with any outstanding civil penalties and fees and with open correction notices resolved
- Continuing education
- None required: the Legislature removed the continuing education requirement when it approved the Electrical Board's current rules (IDAPA 24.39.10) in 2025
- Insurance
- Electrical contractors and limited electrical contractors: proof of $300,000 of liability insurance at every renewal and revival, and proof of workers' compensation insurance if it applies to you
- Inactive contractor
- A contractor not contracting in Idaho can renew on an inactive basis (the law caps that fee at $150) and can't contract while inactive. Going active again takes a $30 processing fee and proof of the insurance
Electrical contractor licenses: Idaho Code 54-1008 says two years, while DOPL's fee table lists a one-year term and $100 renewal, and DOPL's two-year transition changes the date and fee again. Check the expiration date on your license and the fee DOPL shows when you renew.
Idaho Code 54-1013 still mentions continuing education set by the board, but the board's current rules set none since the Legislature removed it in 2025. If the board brings CE back, it has to go through rulemaking first.
How early you can renew: DOPL's transition FAQ says up to 60 days before expiration, while Idaho Code 54-1013 says during the final month of the licensing period, and the two sources also differ on whether the license ends on your birthday or at the end of that month. Go by the expiration date printed on your license, and renew before it.
How to renew
- Look up your license on DOPL's license search to confirm its expiration date: a master or journeyman license expires three years from your birthday.
- Pay any outstanding civil penalties and permit fees, and resolve any open correction notices: DOPL won't renew the license until you do.
- Contractors: have proof of your $300,000 liability policy, and your workers' compensation insurance if it applies, ready to show.
- Renew online through DOPL's online services and pay the fee: $45 for a master or journeyman license. No CE certificates are needed.
- Missed it? An expired license can be revived within one year by paying the revival (reinstatement) fee ($55 for a master or journeyman license).

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your liability insurance policy: contractors show $300,000 of coverage at every renewal
- Your workers' compensation policy, if it applies to you
- Your apprentices' registrations, which move to a two-year cycle from October 30, 2026
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
