Utah Plumber License Renewal (DOPL)
Last reviewed November 2026 · 6 min read
Every Utah plumber license (apprentice, journeyman, master, residential journeyman and residential master) is due for renewal on November 30 of even years, with renewal dates of November 30, 2026 and November 30, 2028. You renew online with the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) in My License One, signing in with your UtahID: the renewal fee is $68 on DOPL's fee schedule, and you need 12 hours of continuing education, at least 8 of them core, apprentices included. A license that isn't renewed by its expiration date expires, and working on it after that is unlawful.
At a glance
- Who needs it
- Utah's Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) licenses apprentice, journeyman, master, residential journeyman and residential master plumbers, and you have to be licensed before you work in the trade
- Expires
- November 30 of even years, for every plumber license classification. That makes the renewal dates November 30, 2026 and November 30, 2028
- Renewal notice
- DOPL emails a renewal notice to the address on file before the license expires (its plumbing page says 90 days before). You can't renew before the renewal cycle opens
- Renew
- Online in My License One, signing in with your UtahID and finding your license (if it isn't listed already) with the details in your renewal notice. DOPL says this works best on a computer rather than a phone, and its plumber rule has you renew online unless DOPL permits otherwise in writing
- After you pay
- DOPL emails a receipt to the address on file up to 2 business days after payment, and a copy of the license 1 to 3 business days after the renewal is approved. Fees are non-refundable
- Continuing education
- 12 hours of approved CE each two-year cycle, at least 8 of them core. The other 4 can be core or professional. Utah law counts apprentice plumbers as licensed plumbers for this, so apprentices owe the 12 hours too
- Licensed late in the cycle
- A license issued during the last 12 months of a renewal cycle runs for a full cycle plus the time left until the coming renewal date, so it doesn't have to be renewed right away
- CE extension
- If a medical condition, humanitarian or ecclesiastical service, a long stay somewhere CE isn't available, or another reasonable cause keeps you from finishing CE, you can ask DOPL for a waiver or more time. Ask by the CE deadline, with the dates and a detailed explanation: it's on you to prove the reason, and DOPL decides
- Core CE
- Building, mechanical, plumbing and energy conservation codes and Utah's code amendments, the Americans with Disabilities Act, medical gas, NFPA 13D and 54, hydronics and waste water treatment, or OSHA training
- Professional CE
- Energy conservation, management training, new technology, plan reading, lien laws and the Utah construction registry, or government regulations
- CE proof
- Keep your certificates: not providing proof of completed CE within 30 days of DOPL's request is unprofessional conduct
- Fee
- $68 to renew any plumber classification, on DOPL's current fee schedule. The schedule also lists surcharges for plumbers, such as a $5 Plumber Education and Enforcement Fund fee, and online payments carry a processing fee
- Military
- Active duty military members and their spouses may qualify for a military fee waiver, requested by email to DOPL with the waiver form, the renewal form and a copy of active military orders
- Inactive status
- Not offered for plumbers: DOPL's rule lists the licenses that can be placed on inactive status, and plumber licenses aren't on it (contractor licenses are). So a plumber license that isn't renewed expires
- Renewing late
- Up to 30 days after expiration: the renewal fee plus a $20 late fee. 31 days to 2 years after: the renewal fee plus a $50 reinstatement fee. More than 2 years: you generally apply again as a new applicant. DOPL's rules make narrow exceptions, so check with DOPL if one may apply to you
- Working expired
- Practicing after your license has expired is unlawful conduct and a criminal offense, and DOPL can discipline you for that time even after you renew
- Contractors
- A plumbing contractor license is separate and expires November 30 of odd years. Renewing it needs an active liability insurance certificate, and workers' compensation coverage, a contract with an approved professional employer organization, or a waiver from the Utah Labor Commission
Tell DOPL about a change of address or email within 10 business days, or the renewal notice goes to the old one.
A plumbing contractor's liability insurance has to cover at least $1,000,000 for each incident and $2,000,000 in total, and stay in force for as long as the license does.
How to renew
- Watch for DOPL's renewal notice email and make sure DOPL has your current email and address.
- Finish 12 hours of approved CE, at least 8 of them core (apprentices too), check that your providers posted them to DOPL's CE records, and keep the certificates.
- Sign in to My License One with your UtahID, find your license (with the renewal notice's details if it isn't listed), and renew it online.
- Pay the $68 renewal fee by November 30. Renewing after that adds a $20 late fee, or a $50 reinstatement fee after 30 days.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your plumbing contractor license, on November 30 of odd years
- The liability insurance and workers' comp (or waiver) you file with DOPL for the contractor license
- The local business license where your business has its principal place of business: Utah law makes it and your DOPL license the only licenses required
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
