Tennessee Limited Licensed Electrician and Plumber Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
The Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors issues the Limited Licensed Electrician (LLE) and Limited Licensed Plumber (LLP) licenses to individuals who pass the trade exam. The board's pages say they're only required in a municipality that uses the Division of Fire Prevention for permits or inspections, and cover work under $25,000 per project. Both run two years, expiring on the last day of the month they were issued, and renew in CORE for $50 with no continuing education. The board's renewal page gives each a 3-month grace period with a late fee.

- Who needs one
- The board's pages say an LLE or LLP license is only required for electrical or plumbing work in a municipality that uses the Division of Fire Prevention for permits or inspections, and covers work under $25,000 per project. Check first with your local government: it may not accept the LLE or LLP license, or may have its own licensing requirement
- LLP exemption
- General maintenance work under $500 is exempt from the LLP license
- Fee
- $50 to renew an LLE or LLP license
- Continuing education
- None. The board's CE rule covers only residential contractor licenses (BC-A, BC-A/r and BC-A,b(sm)), and the LLE and LLP renewal asks only for the application and the fee
- Renewal opens
- The option to renew shows up in your CORE account once you're within 90 days of the expiration date
- Deadline
- Submit the renewal at least 30 days before the expiration date to avoid working on an expired license
- Grace period
- The board's renewal page gives LLE and LLP licenses 3 months after expiration to renew, with a late fee. Ask the board what the late fee comes to for your license
- LLE more than 3 months late
- You apply again as a new applicant: a new initial application, the fee, and the LLE exam, though the board may waive the exam. The board's fee page lists $80 to reinstate an LLE license
- LLP past its grace period
- The board's renewal page says you reapply and meet every requirement for initial licensure. The LLP rules count the time differently, so if yours has lapsed, ask the board what renewing takes
- Change of address
- Tell the board in writing within 30 days of any change of address
An LLE or LLP license doesn't let you call yourself a contractor: that takes a contractor license from the board too. For projects of $25,000 or more, see the Tennessee contractor license guide.
Questions about a late or lapsed license go to the Board for Licensing Contractors: the board's rules and pages don't give the same late fee, or for an LLP the same deadline to apply again.
How to renew
- Check the expiration date on your LLE or LLP license: it expires on the last day of the month it was issued, every two years.
- Log in to CORE once you're within 90 days of that date: the option to renew shows up then.
- Renew and pay the $50 fee at least 30 days before the expiration date, to avoid working on an expired license.
- If your city or county issues its own permits, check whether it accepts your LLE or LLP license or has its own requirement.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Any local license your city or county asks for instead of, or alongside, your LLE or LLP license
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
