New Jersey Electrical Contractor License Renewal

Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read

New Jersey's Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors, part of the Division of Consumer Affairs, licenses electrical contractors and issues the business permits their companies work under. Licenses and business permits both renew every three years and expire on March 31; the current period ends March 31, 2027. Renewing takes 34 hours of continuing education, including a 10-hour National Electrical Code course. You can still renew for 30 days after March 31 with a $50 late fee; after that the license is suspended.

At a glance

Renews every
3 years. Electrical contractor licenses and business permits expire on March 31 of the renewal year. The current period runs from April 1, 2024 through March 31, 2027
Renewal notice
The board sends a renewal notice at least 60 days before the license expires. It also explains the option to renew as inactive
Fee
$225 for the three-year license renewal. Renewing within 30 days after expiration adds a $50 late fee
Business permit
The business permit you contract under renews on the same March 31 date, for $150 for the three years
Continuing education
34 credit hours during the three-year period. They include a 10-hour course on the most recent National Electrical Code: 9 hours on the code and 1 hour on New Jersey's statutes and rules
First renewal
No continuing education is required for the three-year period in which you were first licensed
Extra hours
Up to 8 hours beyond the 34 carry over into the next three-year period
CE limits
No more than 8 hours of course attendance count from one day. Keep your CE records for six years after you complete the credits
Insurance and bond
A business permit holder files a certificate of general liability insurance of at least $300,000 (or a $300,000 bank letter of credit) listing the board as certificate holder, and a $1,000 surety bond in favor of the State of New Jersey, renewed when it expires
Renew
Submit the renewal application and fee to the board before March 31. The renewal notice comes at least 60 days ahead
Late renewal
For up to 30 days after the expiration date you can renew with the renewal fee plus the $50 late fee. During those 30 days the license stays valid
If it's suspended
A license not renewed within 30 days of expiration is suspended without a hearing
Reinstatement
Send a reinstatement application, a certification of employment, the renewal fee for the current period, any past-due renewal fee for the period before it, a $100 reinstatement fee, and proof of the CE that was due
Inactive status
You can renew as inactive and not practice electrical contracting while inactive. Reactivating takes a renewal application, a certification of employment, the $225 renewal fee for the current period and the 34 CE hours

Ask the board for a hardship waiver of CE in writing at least 90 days before renewal.

The board also licenses Class A journeyman electricians, Class A electrical apprentices and Class B wiremen, on the same three-year cycle as electrical contractors. Their CE and fees differ: check with the board.

How to renew

  1. Check your expiration date: March 31, 2027 for the current three-year period, for both your license and your business permit.
  2. Finish your 34 CE hours, including the 10-hour National Electrical Code course (not needed in the period you were first licensed).
  3. Make sure your $300,000 liability certificate (listing the board) and your $1,000 surety bond are current.
  4. Submit the renewal application to the board and pay $225 for the license and $150 for the business permit before March 31.
  5. Missed the date? Renew within 30 days with the $50 late fee, before the license is suspended.

Put this renewal in your calendar

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • Your electrical contracting business permit
  • Your $1,000 surety bond
  • The $300,000 general liability certificate on file with the board
  • Your 34 CE hours for the three-year period
  • General liability insurance policy
  • Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
