Delaware Electrician License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 5 min read
Delaware master, limited, special, journeyperson and residential electrician licenses all expire on June 30 of each even-numbered year and renew together online in DELPROS: the next deadline is June 30, 2028. Master, limited and special electricians complete 10 hours of approved CE and keep $300,000 of general liability insurance; journeyperson and residential electricians complete 5 hours. Miss the deadline and the license expires: you can't work until a late renewal, with a late fee, goes through, and after one year it terminates.
At a glance
- Renews every
- Two years. Master, limited, special, journeyperson and residential electrician licenses must be renewed by June 30 of each even-numbered year, or they expire as of July 1. The next deadline is June 30, 2028
- Renew
- Online in DELPROS, where you answer the renewal questions, attest to your CE and insurance, and pay the renewal fee by credit card. DPR tells you the fee at renewal
- Renewal notice
- DPR emails a renewal notice a few months before the expiration date, to the email address on your record (notices go by email only). Renewing on time is still your responsibility: the board's rules don't require it to notify you
- CE: master, limited and special electricians
- 10 hours of Board-approved CE each renewal period, done by June 30 of the renewal year. From your second renewal, 5 of the 10 must be on the National Electrical Code (NEC)
- CE: journeyperson and residential electricians
- 5 hours of Board-approved CE on the NEC each renewal period, done by June 30 of the renewal year
- CE at your first renewal
- None if you've been licensed less than a year. Licensed at least 1 year but less than 2: 5 hours for master, limited and special electricians, 2 hours for journeyperson and residential electricians
- Insurance
- Every licensee except journeyperson, residential and apprentice electricians must keep general liability insurance of at least $300,000 and attest to it at renewal. Working as an employee, your employer's insurance for the work counts; work on your own needs your own policy
- Audit
- The board randomly audits renewals: if you're picked, you're told within 60 days after the deadline and upload your CE certificates (and, for master, limited and special electricians, proof of the insurance)
- Not renewed by June 30
- The license expires and it is illegal to work as an electrician in Delaware until it is renewed. Filing a late renewal doesn't let you work: there is no grace period
- Late renewal
- Within one year after the deadline, in DELPROS, with a late fee of 50% of the renewal fee on top of it. Every late renewal is audited
- More than a year late
- The license terminates: you reapply as a new applicant and take the licensing exam again, unless you already passed an approved exam covering the NEC Delaware currently uses
- Inactive status
- Ask for it in DELPROS before your license expires. An inactive license still renews every two years (CE attested, no insurance needed, a small inactive renewal fee), and you can't work under it until it's reactivated through a DELPROS Service Request with proof of insurance, the reactivation fee and your CE entered in the CE Tracker
Apprentice electrician licenses follow their own rules since July 1, 2026 (24 Del. C. 1411(b)): they run for a set period instead of renewing every two years. Check yours with the board.
Electrical inspection agency licenses renew every year, by June 30, with a 45-day late window.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your general liability policy (at least $300,000 for master, limited and special electricians)
- Your CE certificates: keep them in case you're audited
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
