Connecticut Electrical License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
Connecticut's Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) licenses electrical contractors and journeypersons, with the Electrical Work Examining Board. Every electrical license expires each year on September 30. Renewing costs $150 for a contractor and $120 for a journeyperson, and takes 4 hours of continuing education a year, finished by June 30, three months before the renewal deadline. An expired license can be reinstated for up to three years; after that you reapply and retest.

- Year. All electrical licenses expire annually on September 30
- Who it covers
- Every electrical license type: E-1 unlimited contractor and E-2 unlimited journeyperson, plus the limited and lines licenses (C-5 to C-8, L-1, L-2, L-5, L-6, T-1, T-2, PV-1, PV-2 and others)
- Fee
- $150 for a contractor license and $120 for a journeyperson license, every year
- Renewal notice
- DCP sends renewal notices about 30 to 45 days before the expiration date, to the email address on file (by regular mail if it has none)
- Continuing education
- 4 credit hours per year, completed by June 30: three months before the September 30 renewal deadline
- First renewal
- No continuing education is required for your first license renewal
- Approved courses
- Courses must be approved by the Connecticut Electrical Board and apply to your license type, and certificates for the 2027 renewal say "2027 Renewal Year". Bring your own copy of the 2023 National Electrical Code to class. Online courses count only if taught live, with real-time video and audio
- Proof of CE
- You attest to finishing your CE when you renew. Keep your certificates for at least four years in case DCP audits you
- Renew
- Online through DCP's renewal website, with your User ID and password or the Fast Track Renewal PIN in your renewal notice. No notice? Email DCP for a login or a mail renewal
- Missing CE
- Failing to complete the required CE can bring civil fines and the suspension or revocation of your license
- Reinstatement
- An expired license can be reinstated if the reinstatement form and fees are submitted no later than three years after it expired. Finish the required CE first. Reinstatement brings the license to the current renewal year
- Reinstatement fee
- $150 for a contractor or $120 for a journeyperson if you didn't work under the license in Connecticut while it was expired. If you did, $165 ($150 plus a $15 late fee) or $132 ($120 plus a $12 late fee) for each year you worked, up to three years
- After three years
- A license expired for more than three years can't be reinstated: you must reapply and retest
If a health or other personal hardship keeps you from finishing CE, ask DCP in writing for an exception, with an explanation and proof. Losing income because your license was cancelled doesn't count as a hardship.
Only individuals hold Connecticut electrical licenses: DCP doesn't accept company applications.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your 4 CE hours for the year, due June 30
- Your CE certificates, kept at least four years for audits
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
