Oregon Plumber License Renewal

Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read

Oregon plumbing licenses from the Building Codes Division (BCD) run on a three-year cycle, and most licenses of one type expire on the same date: the next one for journeyman plumbers is April 1, 2029. A journeyman plumber renews for $180 with 24 hours of approved CE, including 4 hours of code change and a 4-hour Oregon rule and law course. Miss the date and you can't work under the license; within one year you can reapply without retesting, after that you retest.

At a glance

Renews every
Three years. Most licenses of one type expire on the same date, so a first license can be short; the expiration date is printed on your license
Next renewal date
April 1, 2029 for journeyman plumber (JP) and solar heating and cooling installer (STL) licenses. April 1, 2028 for water treatment installer (WTI) and residential water heater installer (WHI) licenses
Fee
$180 to renew a journeyman plumber license, including a $30 fee to track continuing education. $150 to renew a water treatment installer, residential water heater installer or solar heating and cooling installer license. $450 to renew a plumbing business license
CE: journeyman plumbers
24 hours each three-year cycle: 4 hours of code change, 16 code related and a 4-hour Oregon rule and law course
CE: limited specialty plumbers
8 hours of code related CE each three-year cycle for a solar heating and cooling installer. Water treatment installers and residential water heater installers need none
Code change hours
Part of a journeyman plumber's hours must be code change courses: you haven't met the requirement without the right number of them, whatever your total
Approved courses
Only approved courses and providers count. Providers report your hours to BCD, and your CE must be in BCD's system before you can renew: check it in the License Holder Search.
First renewal
No CE if your license was issued within 6 months of its expiration date. Within 12 months: the lesser of 8 hours or your license's requirement. Within 24 months: the lesser of 16 hours or your license's requirement. New licensees don't need a code change course
Renew
Online through BCD's license system (ordcbs.mylicense.com), on or before the expiration date: complete the renewal, finish all your CE and pay the fee. BCD mails a renewal notice to the address it has for you, and keeping that address current is your responsibility
After expiration
You can't work under an expired license until every renewal requirement, CE included, is met. Within one year of expiration you can reapply, pay the renewal fee and finish the CE you owed. After one year you apply again and retake the exam
Extensions
BCD or its board may extend the time to finish CE or renew for hardship or illness (a written request), never for not paying the fee or a renewal application that was lost or never arrived; and for military duty of 60 days or more (a written request with your orders)

CE classes can be taken any time during the three-year cycle, so there's no need to leave them for the last few weeks.

A plumbing business license renews separately from your journeyman plumber license, for $450: check both dates.

How to renew

  1. Check the expiration date printed on your license, or BCD's next renewal date for your license type.
  2. Look up your CE in the License Holder Search and finish the hours you're missing with approved courses, code change hours and the Oregon rule and law course included. Give providers time to report them.
  3. Renew online through BCD's license system and pay the fee on or before the expiration date.
  4. If you missed it, stop work under the license and reapply within one year to avoid retaking the exam.

Put this renewal in your calendar

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • Your plumbing business license, if you hold one
  • Your Construction Contractors Board (CCB) license, if you hold one
  • General liability insurance policy
  • Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
