Florida Contractor License Renewal (CILB)
Last reviewed October 2026
Florida construction licenses under the CILB (general, building, residential, plumbing, mechanical, A/C, roofing, pool and more) all expire on August 31, every two years. Certified licenses (starting with C) renew in even-numbered years and registered licenses (starting with R) in odd-numbered years. You need 14 hours of continuing education each cycle, with set topics, and a license not renewed on time goes delinquent: you can't contract with it until it's renewed.
- Deadline
- August 31, every 2 years
- Continuing education
- 14 hours each renewal cycle, including at least 1 hour each of a specialized or advanced module course, workplace safety, business practices, workers' compensation, and laws and rules regulating the construction industry
Florida Electrical Contractor License Renewal (ECLB)
Last reviewed October 2026
Florida electrical contractor licenses, certified and registered, renew every two years on August 31 of even-numbered years. Electrical contractors need 11 hours of continuing education each cycle, set by topic, and no more than 4 of them can be home study. The requirement dropped from 14 to 11 hours in 2020, so older guides showing 14 are out of date.
- Deadline
- August 31 of even-numbered years, for certified and registered electrical contractors. Next: August 31, 2028
- Continuing education
- 11 hours for certified and registered electrical contractors: 1 hour each of business practices, workers' compensation, workplace safety, and Florida laws and rules, plus 7 technical hours, one of them a Florida Building Code specialized or advanced module course
Miami-Dade Certificate of Competency Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026
Miami-Dade County certifies local contractors and tradesmen through its Construction Trades Qualifying Board (CTQB), under Chapter 10 of the Code of Miami-Dade County: building and building specialty categories, and electrical, mechanical and plumbing. A certificate generally renews every two years, and the county sends a renewal notice two months before your active license expires. Each renewal needs proof of 16 hours of continuing education from county-approved course sponsors, including one hour on Chapter 10 and one on Florida's Construction Lien Law (Florida Statute 713). Renew before the expiration date: the department may establish penalty fees for late renewals, and a renewal sent without proof of the CE puts the certificate in involuntary inactive status.
- Renews every
- Generally every two years (the county's Contractor License Renewal page). Go by the expiration date on your certificate
- Continuing education
- 16 hours at each renewal, earned during the expiring term, of which 1 hour must be on Chapter 10, Code of Miami-Dade County and 1 hour on Florida Statute 713, Construction Lien Law. Courses must come from a Miami-Dade County-approved course sponsor (the CTQB's Approved Course Sponsor and Course list), and 100% of the hours may be interactive distance learning (internet) courses or in-class learning
Pinellas County Contractor License Renewal (PCCLB)
Last reviewed October 2026
The Pinellas County Construction Licensing Board (PCCLB) licenses construction contractors and journeymen who work in Pinellas County, including all of its cities. County certified contractor and journeyman licenses renew every year: renewal opens June 1 and the licenses expire September 30. Contractors also submit proof of 14 hours of continuing education in every odd-numbered year before the license can be renewed. Renew late and the PCCLB's fee schedule adds a $100 late fee, then a reinstatement fee after October 31. State-certified contractors no longer register or renew with the PCCLB.
- Renews every
- Year. County certified and journeyman licenses expire September 30; renewal begins June 1
- Continuing education
- Contractors certified by the PCCLB must submit proof of 14 hours of continuing education in every odd-numbered year to renew their license, aligned since 2025 with the State of Florida's requirements for the matching state license. Most classes need at least 1 hour each of a specialized or advanced module, workplace safety, business practices, workers' compensation and laws and rules (building, general, residential and roofing contractors and several specialties also 1 hour of wind mitigation); electrical contractors take 6 hours of technical and 1 hour of an advanced Florida Building Code module among theirs; other trades, such as pool/spa and alarm contractors, add topics of their own (see the PCCLB's requirements sheet). Proof must be submitted before your license can be renewed
Palm Beach County Contractor License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026
The Construction Industry Licensing Board of Palm Beach County (CILB/PBC) certifies contractors, journeymen and technicians in the county's regulated trades, under Special Act 67-1876. Certificates renew every two years and expire at midnight on September 30: contractor (unlimited trade) and technician certificates in odd years, journeyman and limited trade certificates in even years. Contractors, active or inactive, upload proof of 14 hours of continuing education for each renewal. A certificate not renewed during September becomes inoperative, and late fees accrue monthly.
- Renews every
- Two years. County unlimited trade licenses and technicians are renewed every two years on odd years; journeyman, journeyman limited and limited trade licenses every two years on even years.
- Continuing education
- 14 hours of Board-approved continuing education for each 2 years before renewal, for active and inactive contractors (excluding journeymen and technicians). It must include a one-hour course on each of Advanced Building Code, Business Practices, Laws and Rules, Workers' Compensation and Workplace Safety/OSHA, with general courses in any construction trade for the rest (Rule 4.C)
Hillsborough County Contractor License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026
To do construction work regulated by the State of Florida in Hillsborough County, you need a contractor license issued by the Florida DBPR or by Hillsborough County. Licenses registered with the county are renewed in its HillsGovHub portal. What renewal means depends on the license. A Local Specialty license, issued by the county and valid only in Hillsborough County, renews every 2 years for $140; the county's fee list also names a $70 late fee per year. State Registered and State Certified contractors renew with the DBPR first, then renew their county record in HillsGovHub, with no county fee, by entering the new state expiration date and keeping their insurance information current. A journeyman electrician or plumber certificate of competency does not expire, and no renewal is required.
- Renews every
- 2 years for a Local Specialty license. A State Registered or State Certified license is renewed with the county after its DBPR renewal. A journeyman electrician or plumber certificate does not expire
