  • New York City Master Plumber License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

In New York City, plumbing work must be done by a licensed master plumber or under one's direct and continuing supervision, and the license comes from the city's Department of Buildings (DOB). It runs three years. Renew it in DOB NOW: Licensing 30 to 90 days before the expiration date on your license card, with a physical examination form (LIC62) completed within the last 90 days, your 7-hour continuing education certificate and $225 ($150 for the license, $75 for the seal). A renewal sent within 30 days of expiring pays a late fee, an unrenewed license is cancelled when it expires, and after a year you have to apply again as a new applicant.

    Renews every
Three years. A license expires three years from the date it was issued and can be renewed every three years after that without an exam (§28-401.11). Go by the expiration date on your license card
    Continuing education
7 hours: the original 7-Hour Continuing Education Course Certificate of Completion is uploaded with every renewal
  • New York City Home Improvement Contractor License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

In New York City, home improvement contractors are licensed by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP), not the Department of Buildings. The license period is two years and every Home Improvement Contractor license expires on February 28 of an odd year, in 2027, 2029 and so on. DCWP mails a renewal package about three months before. Renew online through your DCWP Business Dashboard or by mail, and renew before the license expires to keep operating and avoid fines: submitting the application doesn't renew the license by itself.

    Renews every
    Two years (the license period)
  • New York City Master Electrician License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

In New York City, electrical work must be done by a licensed master electrician or under one's direct and continuing supervision (low voltage work and special electricians are the exceptions), and the license comes from the city's Department of Buildings (DOB). Renew it online in DOB NOW: Licensing 30 to 90 days before the expiration date on your license, with a physical exam form (LIC62) completed within the last 90 days and the certificate for an 8-hour Department-approved course taken in the year before renewal. A renewal sent 30 days or fewer before it expires is late: it pays a late fee and needs a notarized affidavit saying why. DOB's own pages differ on the license term and on some fees, so go by the date on your license and the amounts DOB NOW shows.

    Expires
On the expiration date on your license: go by that date. DOB's pages give different license terms (1 year on its Master & Special Electricians page, 3 years in its 2026 DOB NOW: Licensing presentation for electricians)
    Continuing education
A Department-approved course of at least 8 hours covering the New York City Electrical Code, completed during the one year immediately before renewal (1 RCNY §104-06). It's taught live, in person or virtually: on-demand, self-paced courses don't count
  • New York City General Contractor Registration Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

In New York City, a contractor that applies for a permit to build a new one-, two- or three-family home must, with a few exceptions, hold a general contractor registration from the Department of Buildings (DOB). The registration runs for 3 years. Renew it online in DOB NOW, in the BIS Options section, 30 to 90 days before the expiration date on your registration card, with a typewritten, notarized LIC6 form and the Child Support Form. A renewal sent within 30 days of that date pays a $50 late fee on top of the $240 renewal fee, and after a year you have to apply for a new registration.

    Renews every
3 years: DOB lists a 3-year registration term, and §28-418.1.1 has a registration expire on its third anniversary or on another date DOB sets by rule
  • Suffolk County Home Improvement License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

A home improvement contractor working on one- and two-family homes in Suffolk County, on Long Island, needs a license from the county's Division of Consumer Affairs (Suffolk County Code Chapter 563). The license usually runs for two years: the code has it expire on the last day of the 24th month of its issuance. Apply and pay the renewal fee before that date: under the code, a license not renewed by its expiration date is null and void on that date. At renewal you swear that all your insurance is in effect (or file a certificate of insurance), and pool and spa contractors also show 6 hours of continuing education. Electrical and plumbing work is licensed separately.

    Renews every
Two years. Licenses other than temporary ones are for two years from the date of issuance, at the discretion of the Office, and expire on the last day of the 24th month of such issuance; subsequent renewals are for periods of two years (§ 563-6A). A regular license that replaced a temporary one expires on the last day of the 24th month following the issuance of the temporary license (§ 563-22D). Go by the expiration date on your license
    Continuing education
None for most home improvement contractors. A contractor who builds, installs or services swimming pools, permanent spas or portable spas must document at least 6 hours of continuing education in their industry since their last license application or renewal (§ 563-17I)
  • Nassau County Home Improvement License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

A contractor doing home improvement work on homes for up to three families in Nassau County, on Long Island, needs a license from the county's Department of Consumer Affairs (Nassau County Administrative Code §§ 21-11.0 to 21-11.16). The license runs for two years and expires on the last day of the 24th month following issuance. Renew before that date: the department charges a $110 late fee on a renewal filed more than 15 days after the license expired, and after 90 days you need the commissioner's permission to renew at all. At renewal you file a current certificate of liability insurance that names your type of work, workers' compensation proof and, if your work is on Rule 18's list of trades, a current RRP lead renovator certificate.

    Renews every
Two years. All licenses, except temporary licenses, are for two years from the date of issuance and expire on the last day of the 24th month following issuance; a license that hasn't been suspended or revoked may be renewed for an additional period of two years from its expiration (§ 21-11.5). Go by the expiration date on your license
  • Westchester County Plumber and Electrician License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

Westchester County licenses plumbers and electricians county-wide through its Department of Consumer Protection, under the Board of Plumbing Examiners and the Electrical Licensing Board. Every plumbing and electrical license is renewed each year and expires on December 31. The dates that matter differ: county law asks for a master plumber's renewal 60 days before expiration, and a master or restricted master plumber's renewal received after October 31 pays a late fee, while an electrician's renewal is late after December 31. Master plumbers, restricted master plumbers and electricians also complete 4 hours of continuing education from a board-approved provider each year before they renew, and file proof of $1 million liability, workers' compensation and disability insurance.

    Renews every
Year. Plumbing and electrical licenses are renewed on an annual basis, with all licenses expiring on December 31st (the department's Renew Your License page; § 277.506, § 277.707)
    Continuing education
4 hours annually from a board-approved provider, completed before you apply to renew or shelve, for all Countywide Master Plumbers and Restricted Master Plumbers (Plumbing Board Rule 9) and all electricians, current or shelved (Electrical Board Rule 14). No active or shelved license is renewed without written proof you've taken the class. Plumbing classes are in person only (virtual classes are not allowed); electrical classes can be in person or virtual
