Maryland Home Improvement License Renewal (MHIC)
Last reviewed October 2026
A Maryland home improvement contractor license runs for two years from your own renewal date. The MHIC sends renewal instructions about 60 days before it expires, and it won't renew an active contractor license without proof of at least $500,000 in general liability insurance. A license renewed after it expires isn't backdated: you can't work on it until the renewal goes through.
- Renews every
- 2 years. Each licensee has a personal renewal date
- Continuing education
- None: the Home Improvement Law (Business Regulation Article, Title 8, Subtitle 3) and the MHIC regulations (COMAR 09.08) set no CE requirement for renewal
Maryland Home Builder Registration Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026
Maryland's Home Builder Registration Act requires home builders, with limited exceptions, to register with the Home Builder Registration Unit of the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division before contracting with consumers to build or sell a new home. A registration lasts two years and must be renewed before it expires: under the Act, once a registration has expired it may not be renewed. The renewal fee is $400, $800 or $1,200, depending on how many building permits for new homes you were issued in the preceding calendar year, and the Unit mails a renewal form at least 60 days ahead.
- Renews every
- 2 years: unless renewed, a registration expires on the second anniversary of its effective date. A registrant that meets the renewal requirements and renews before then gets an additional 2-year term
- Continuing education
- None listed: the Unit's home builder registration page names no continuing education requirement
Maryland HVACR License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026
Maryland HVACR licenses from the State Board of Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors renew for 2-year terms. The renewal fee runs from $12 for an apprentice to $94.50 for a master or limited contractor, and there's no continuing education. Masters, master restricted and limited contractors who sign HVACR contracts must also show at least $300,000 of general liability and $100,000 of property damage insurance: the Board can't renew their license without it. Within 4 years of a license expiring, the Board may restore it on payment of the renewal fee.
- Renews every
- 2 years. The HVACR law sets licenses to expire on October 1 of an odd-numbered year, but lets the Secretary of Labor stagger expiration dates: check the date on your own license
- Continuing education
- None: the Board does not require continuing education credits
Maryland Electrician License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026
Maryland State electrician licenses (master, journeyperson and apprentice) from the State Board of Electricians are valid for 2 years and renew for another 2-year term, on a staggered basis, so go by the expiration date on your own license. To renew a master license you need 10 hours of continuing education from the license term (at least 5 in a classroom) and to renew a journeyperson license 5 hours. The renewal fee is $31.50 for a master, $18.50 for a journeyperson and $12 for an apprentice. A master who contracts for electrical work must also carry at least $300,000 of general liability and $100,000 of property damage insurance: the Board can't renew the license without it. Within 2 years of expiration you can reinstate a license by meeting the renewal requirements and paying a reinstatement fee on top of the renewal fee.
- Renews every
- 2 years. The Board says a license is valid for two years from the date it was issued and that licenses currently expire on a staggered basis: check the expiration date on your own license
- Continuing education
- 10 hours to renew a master license and 5 hours to renew a journeyperson license, completed during the 24 months immediately before renewal. At least 5 of a master's 10 hours must be in a classroom setting. Hours from before the prior license term don't count
Maryland Plumber and Gas Fitter License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026
Plumber and gas fitter licenses from the Maryland State Board of Plumbing renew every 2 years, and the Board says they expire two years from the date of issue, so go by the date on your own license. The renewal fee is $87.50 for a master plumber/gas fitter, $43.50 for a journey plumber/gas fitter and $18.50 for an apprentice, and there's no continuing education to keep a license. A master who contracts for plumbing work must also send proof of at least $300,000 of bodily injury and $100,000 of property damage liability insurance: the Board can't renew the license without it. Within 4 years of expiration the Board reinstates a license that meets the renewal requirements. After that, you also have to pass the appropriate examination.
- Renews every
- 2 years. The Board says its licenses and certificates expire two years from the date of issue: check the expiration date on your own license
- Continuing education
- None to keep a license. The Board requires 8 hours of continuing education each calendar year only for plumbing inspectors
