License renewal guides / Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania license and registration renewals

Every LicenseLedger guide for Pennsylvania on one page: what each one covers and, where its guide gives them, when it expires or renews and the continuing education it asks for. Open a guide for its fees and how to renew.

  • Pennsylvania HIC Registration Renewal (HICPA)

    Last reviewed October 2026

Pennsylvania contractors who do at least $5,000 of home improvements on private residences a year register with the Attorney General's Bureau of Consumer Protection under the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act (HICPA). A registration is valid for two years and must be renewed biennially, and an unregistered contractor can't offer or perform home improvements. Your liability insurance is part of the registration, so a new policy or a policy renewal has to be reported within 30 days.

    Renews every
2 years: registrations are valid for two years and must be renewed biennially
    Continuing education
None: the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act (73 P.S. § 517.1 et seq.) sets no continuing education requirement
  • Philadelphia Contractor License Renewal (L&I)

    Last reviewed October 2026

Philadelphia's Department of Licenses and Inspections (L&I) issues a Contractor License to businesses doing construction, demolition or repair work in the city that doesn't need a specialized license of its own. It must be renewed every year, online through eCLIPSE or in person at the Permit and License Center, and the renewal fee is $126. To renew you must be current on all City taxes and fines, have proof of active insurance, and keep a supervisor with current OSHA 30 training on file with L&I. Renewing more than 60 days after the due date adds 1.5% of the license fee for each month since the license expired.

    Renews every
Every year: L&I says this license must be renewed annually
  • Pittsburgh Contractor and Trade License Renewal (PLI)

    Last reviewed October 2026

The City of Pittsburgh licenses its own contractors and tradespeople through the Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections (PLI): a General Contractor License for work under a Commercial Building Development Application and for certain residential and demolition permits, and Electrical, Mechanical, Fire Suppression and Stationary Power Engineer trade licenses, issued to individuals. Every license expires 365 days after it was issued, and the 2026 fee schedule puts each renewal at $90. You can renew up to 45 days before the expiration date through OneStopPGH or at the OneStopPGH counter, and PLI doesn't have to remind you. A trade license renewal needs proof of 8 hours of continuing education from the previous 12 months. After the expiration date there's a 60-day grace period: a $50 late fee from day 31, and on day 61 the license lapses and you apply for a new one.

    Renews every
Year: all licenses expire 365 days from the date of issuance unless renewed. A renewed license starts the day after the old one's expiration date
  • Philadelphia Plumber License Renewal (L&I)

    Last reviewed October 2026

Philadelphia's Department of Licenses and Inspections (L&I) says plumbing work needs to be done by a licensed master plumber, and issues three plumbing licenses: Master Plumber, Journeyman Plumber and Plumber Apprentice. All three must be renewed every year, online through eCLIPSE or in person at the Permit and License Center. Renewal costs $253 for a master plumber, $126 for a journeyman and $25 for an apprentice. A master plumber must be current on City taxes to renew, and an apprentice files proof of continued employment. Renewing more than 60 days after the due date adds 1.5% of the license fee for each month since the license expired.

  • Philadelphia Electrical Contractor License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

Philadelphia's Department of Licenses and Inspections (L&I) says you need an Electrical Contractor License to do electrical work in the city, low-voltage wiring included, and individuals who perform electrical work can apply for it. It must be renewed every year, online through eCLIPSE or in person at the Permit and License Center, and the renewal fee is $202. To renew you must be current on all City taxes and fines, have proof of an active insurance policy, and have proof of at least eight hours of NFPA 70 coursework earned during the previous license period. Renewing more than 60 days after the due date adds 1.5% of the license fee for each month since the license expired.
