Wisconsin license and certification renewals

Every LicenseLedger guide for Wisconsin on one page: what each one covers and, where its guide gives them, when it expires or renews and the continuing education it asks for. Open a guide for its fees and how to renew.

  • Wisconsin Electrician License Renewal (DSPS)

    Last reviewed October 2026

Wisconsin master and journeyman electrician licenses run up to four years and expire on June 30. Renewal is online in LicensE, and it won't go through until your CE provider has entered all your hours: 24 for master and journeyman electricians, 18 for residential and industrial licenses. Not getting a renewal notice is no excuse for missing the date.

    Renews every
Up to 4 years, expiring on June 30: master, residential master, journeyman, residential journeyman and industrial journeyman electrician and electrical contractor licenses. Check the expiration year on your license in LicensE
    Continuing education
24 hours for master and journeyman electricians; 18 hours for residential master, residential journeyman and industrial journeyman electricians. Electrical contractor licenses have none. Only DSPS-approved courses count
  • Wisconsin Plumber License Renewal (DSPS)

    Last reviewed October 2026

Wisconsin master and journeyman plumber licenses, restricted appliance and restricted service included, run for four years and expire on March 31 (not June 30, like the electrical licenses). You renew online in LicensE, and it won't let you submit until your CE provider has entered all your hours: 24 for master and journeyman plumbers, 12 for the restricted licenses. Finish your CE early, because providers have up to 14 days to enter it.

  • Wisconsin Dwelling Contractor Certification Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

DSPS, Wisconsin's Department of Safety and Professional Services, says that to get a building permit for a one- or two-family dwelling you need a Dwelling Contractor (or Dwelling Contractor Restricted) certification and must hold, or employ someone with, a Dwelling Contractor Qualifier certification, unless you're an owner who lives, or will live, in the dwelling. The two main credentials renew on different clocks, both counted from the date of issue: the business's Dwelling Contractor certification every year ($25, with proof of a bond of at least $25,000 or at least $250,000 per occurrence of general liability insurance, and no CE), and the person's Dwelling Contractor Qualifier certification every 2 years ($30, after 12 hours of department-approved continuing education that your course provider uploads). Renewal opens about 4 weeks before the credential expires, in LicensE.

    Renews every
Dwelling Contractor: 1 year. Dwelling Contractor Qualifier: 2 years. Both renewal dates are counted from the date of issue, so go by the expiration date on each credential
    Continuing education
Dwelling Contractor Qualifier: 12 hours of relevant department-approved continuing education for each 2-year renewal, 4 of them in construction laws and codes and contracts, liability, and risk management. The Dwelling Contractor and Dwelling Contractor Restricted certifications have no CE requirement
  • Wisconsin HVAC Contractor and Qualifier Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) issues two HVAC contracting credentials: the HVAC Contractor registration, held by the business, and the HVAC Qualifier certification, held by a person. Both run four years and renew on the date they were issued, so each has its own date. Renewal is online in LicensE, costs $160 for the contractor and $60 for the qualifier, and needs no continuing education. A credential expired more than four years goes through DSPS's reinstatement application instead.

    Renews every
Four years. Both credentials renew on their date of issuance, not on one statewide date: check the expiration date on yours
    Continuing education
    None for either credential
