  • Ohio Contractor License Renewal (OCILB)

    Last reviewed October 2026

The Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) licenses commercial electrical, HVAC, plumbing, hydronics and refrigeration contractors: the state license often called a master license. It renews every year, and renewal takes 10 hours of approved continuing education and at least $500,000 of contractor liability insurance, not just the fee. Residential work is regulated by local building and health departments, which may also require the state license.

    Renews every
Year (members of the compliant contractor program can choose every three years instead). All the OCILB licenses you hold expire on the same date: the expiration date of your original license
    Continuing education
10 hours of approved CE each year, however many licenses you hold. Electrical license holders need at least 5 of them in electrical code. Extra hours don't carry over, and no more than 10 count in one day
  • Cincinnati Contractor Registration Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

Every contractor working inside Cincinnati city limits needs a current City contractor registration under Cincinnati Municipal Code Chapter 1106, and the City can't issue building permits until all applicable contractors are registered. A registration for a state-licensed contractor is valid until the state license expires; for everyone else, go by the expiration date on your City registration. The City's registration checklist says you can renew without penalty in the 60 days before it expires. It also lists a $78.75 late fee for a renewal sent within 30 days after the expiration date, and a reactivation fee after that.

    Expires
A City registration for a state-licensed contractor is valid until the state license expires. Other contractors go by the expiration date on their City registration
