Suffolk County Home Improvement License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 7 min read
A home improvement contractor working on one- and two-family homes in Suffolk County, on Long Island, needs a license from the county's Division of Consumer Affairs (Suffolk County Code Chapter 563). The license usually runs for two years: the code has it expire on the last day of the 24th month of its issuance. Apply and pay the renewal fee before that date: under the code, a license not renewed by its expiration date is null and void on that date. At renewal you swear that all your insurance is in effect (or file a certificate of insurance), and pool and spa contractors also show 6 hours of continuing education. Electrical and plumbing work is licensed separately.
At a glance
- Who needs it
- Anyone in business as a home improvement contractor on residential property (one- or two-family houses and their property) in Suffolk County, unless exempt under the code. Home improvement contracting includes repair, remodeling, alterations, additions, painting, carpentry, fencing, driveways, flooring, HVAC ductwork, masonry, roofing, siding, pools and spas, waterproofing, landscaping and tree services. It excludes electrical and plumbing work and the construction of a new home (§ 563-16, § 563-17A)
- Not required
- A contractor engaged in home maintenance (limited to the simple repair of existing facilities and systems, without altering the original design or function) or decorating, and an employee (other than a salesman) working for wages for a licensed home improvement contractor, among the code's exemptions (§ 563-23)
- Renews every
- Two years. Licenses other than temporary ones are for two years from the date of issuance, at the discretion of the Office, and expire on the last day of the 24th month of such issuance; subsequent renewals are for periods of two years (§ 563-6A). A regular license that replaced a temporary one expires on the last day of the 24th month following the issuance of the temporary license (§ 563-22D). Go by the expiration date on your license
- Deadline
- Before the expiration date. Failure to apply and pay the renewal fee before the expiration date renders the license null and void on the expiration date (§ 563-6C)
- Renewal fee
- $200 per annum for a home improvement contracting license or its renewal (§ 563-19B). An applicant who isn't incorporated and whose net business or related personal income from home improvement contracting doesn't exceed $20,000 per annum may qualify for half that fee; the Director may require proof of eligibility (§ 563-19E, § 563-24)
- Insurance at renewal
- A sworn affidavit stating that all insurance is in effect, or a certificate of insurance filed. Certificates of public liability and property damage insurance and workers' compensation also go to the Office whenever you change insurance carrier (§ 563-17C)
- Insurance and bond amounts
- The Director may require a surety bond (no more than $100,000) and/or certificates of public liability and property damage insurance of $500,000 per occurrence combined single limit. Home raising or elevating work also needs a riggers liability extension endorsement (or similar) with at least $500,000 per occurrence and a $2,000,000 aggregate (§ 563-11A)
- Continuing education
- None for most home improvement contractors. A contractor who builds, installs or services swimming pools, permanent spas or portable spas must document at least 6 hours of continuing education in their industry since their last license application or renewal (§ 563-17I)
- Other renewal requirements
- A Federal Tax Identification Number or New York State Sales Tax Identification Number (§ 563-5J); no outstanding child-support judgment or arrears, unless you're current on a judicially approved payment schedule (§ 563-17J); and, if you apply any fertilizer, a turf management course approved by the county's Commissioner of the Department of Environment and Energy (§ 563-17F). Contractors who build and install pools and permanent spas over 24 inches in depth, or service the plumbing, heating and/or electrical elements of pools and spas, also show the certification and two years of experience § 563-17G or H asks for (not required of electricians or plumbers licensed under Article XI)
- Salesman ID cards
- A salesman needs an identification card for each licensed home improvement contractor they work for: $50 per annum per card, renewal included (§ 563-18, § 563-19C and D)
- Changes to report
- A change of address or trade name, in writing within seven business days. A change of control in ownership or management, also within seven business days: an individual licensee applies to assign or transfer the license, or it terminates; every other licensee notifies the Office in writing (§ 563-6H and J)
- Inactive license
- If you stop doing home improvement work, you can apply to inactivate (shelve) the license for up to three years, at $50 for each annual period of inactivity sought (§ 563-6L)
- Working unlicensed
- Conducting the business without obtaining a license, or after a license was suspended or revoked, is a misdemeanor: on conviction, a fine of up to $5,000, up to one year in prison, or both (§ 563-12). A contract signed without a valid license is unenforceable by the contractor and voidable by the other party (§ 563-8)

Electrical and plumbing work isn't home improvement contracting under the county code: the county licenses electricians and plumbers separately, under Article XI of Chapter 563. The county's Licensing page says all Master Electricians and Restricted Electricians must complete required continuing education hours before renewal.
Every licensee must keep an establishment in New York State, put the license number in all home improvement advertising, and give consumers the license number in writing on the contract or paid receipt (§ 563-17A and D, § 563-15.1).
This license is Suffolk County's. New York City's home improvement license comes from its Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.
How to renew
- Check the expiration date on your license, and contact Consumer Affairs if you're unsure of it: don't work it out yourself.
- Get your renewal paperwork from Consumer Affairs well before that date: the Licensing page's "Apply for a New License" button says it does not include renewals, so call (631) 853-4600 or use its virtual assistant to find out how to file.
- Confirm your liability, property damage and workers' compensation insurance is in effect, ready to swear to it in an affidavit or file a certificate of insurance. Pool and spa contractors: have your 6 hours of continuing education documented.
- Submit the renewal with your tax ID number and pay the fee ($200 per annum) before the expiration date: after it, the license is null and void.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Salesman identification cards, renewed per card
- Your surety bond, if the Director required one
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
