  • Massachusetts Electrician License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

Massachusetts master electrician, journeyman electrician, systems contractor and systems technician licenses all expire on July 31 every third year: the next is July 31, 2028. Renewal opens in the Division of Occupational Licensure's eLIPSE platform 90 days before, no renewal notice is mailed, and it costs $78 for a journeyman or systems technician and $117 for a master or systems contractor. Unless you're a journeyman or systems technician licensed in the 90 days before, you can't renew without 21 hours of continuing education taken in the three years before. Let it lapse more than 90 days without that CE and you take the latest 15-hour course and a 6-hour course before reinstating; after more than three years, you must pass the Massachusetts exam.

    Renews every
3 years. Every license expires on July 31 every third year, counted from July 31, 1989: the next expiration is July 31, 2028
    Continuing education
21 clock hours in the three years before renewal: 15 hours on the Massachusetts Electrical Code (527 CMR 12.00), business, law and related topics with a Board-approved provider, and 6 hours of professional development (Electrical Code, business, law, first aid, safety, Building Code and related topics) that need not be from an approved provider. Without them you can't renew
  • Massachusetts Plumber and Gas Fitter License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

Massachusetts plumber, gas fitter and liquefied petroleum (LP) gas installer licenses are issued for two years and renewed in every even-numbered year, from February 1 until the May 1 deadline (the next is May 1, 2028), online in the Division of Occupational Licensure's eLIPSE platform. A master plumber pays $78, a journeyman $52, and every renewal received after May 1 adds a $57 late fee. Journeyman and master plumbers need 12 hours of approved continuing education each cycle; gas fitters and LP installers need 6. Let a license expire and you finish the missed CE before reinstating; after more than six years, you finish the current cycle's CE and pass the full Board exam for your highest license instead.

    Renews every
2 years. Licenses are issued for two years and renewed every two years on or before May 1
    Continuing education
Every two-year cycle, with a Board-approved provider: 12 clock hours for journeyman and master plumbers, 6 clock hours for gas fitters and LP gas installers. Apprentices need none. Online or correspondence courses count only if the Board approved them
  • Massachusetts HIC Registration Renewal (Home Improvement Contractor)

    Last reviewed November 2026

A Massachusetts home improvement contractor (HIC) registration from the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation must be renewed every two years, for a $100 fee plus any outstanding balance, online only in the MA Contractor Hub: paper applications and paper certified checks are sent back. The office says to start 30 to 60 days before your expiration date. Let it expire and, the office says, you reapply: a $150 registration fee plus a $100 to $500 Guaranty Fund payment, depending on how many people you employ, and your ability to pull municipal permits may be affected. Failing to renew, or knowingly, willfully or negligently working unregistered, can bring a fine of up to $5,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.

    Renews every
2 years. A certificate of registration is valid for two years from the date it's issued
  • Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

Massachusetts refrigeration licenses (refrigeration apprentice, journeyman refrigeration technician, and master refrigeration technician/refrigeration contractor) are issued by the Office of Public Safety and Inspections (OPSI) for the Bureau of Pipefitters, Refrigeration Technicians and Sprinkler Fitters. They renew every two years and expire on the licensee's birthday. OPSI emails and mails a renewal notice 60 days before the license expires. Renew online through the My License portal or by mail: $50 for a journeyman/technician, $75 for a master/contractor, $20 for an apprentice. A license not renewed at its expiration date becomes void, and after one year it can be reinstated only by passing the exam again.

    Renews every
    Two years (biennial renewal)
  • Massachusetts Sheet Metal License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

Massachusetts sheet metal licenses (apprentice, journeyperson, master, instructor, business and school) are issued by the Board of Examiners of Sheet Metal Workers, part of the Division of Occupational Licensure (DOL). Individual licenses renew every two years and expire on the 28th day of your birth month; a business license renews every two years on the anniversary of its issue date. You renew online through DOL's eLIPSE platform, and the board lists renewal fees of $40 for an apprentice, $80 for a journeyperson and $100 for a master. No continuing education is currently required. An individual license renewed within two years of expiring costs the current fee plus a late fee; after two years, you apply for re-issuance, and a journeyperson or master license requires a retest.

    Renews every
Two years, for individual and business licenses alike
    Continuing education
None currently required: 271 CMR 4.00 says the board anticipates adding a requirement in the future, by a separate regulation change announced in future renewal documents
  • Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

A Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License (CSL) from the Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) runs three years when first issued, then two years with each renewal. Renewing costs $100 and takes continuing education first: 12 hours for an unrestricted license, 10 for a restricted (one- and two-family) license and 6 for a specialty license, with no more than 6 hours online. You can't work as a construction supervisor on an expired license, but there's a one-year grace period to renew, and for an additional $100 it can be renewed up to two years after expiration.

    Renews every
Two years. A license expires three years from the date it's first issued, and each renewal license expires two years from its date of issuance, which is noted on the license
    Continuing education
12 hours for an unrestricted license (CS), 10 hours for a restricted one- and two-family license (CSFA) and 6 hours for a specialty license (CSSL), however many specialties it covers, every two-year license cycle. Complete it before you request a renewal application
