  • Tennessee Contractor License Renewal (BLC)

    Last reviewed October 2026

In Tennessee you need a contractor license from the Board for Licensing Contractors before bidding or contracting on a project of $25,000 or more as a prime contractor (certain subcontractors need one too, such as electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and roofing subcontractors when their part is $25,000 or more). The license belongs to the business, lasts two years, and renewing it means uploading a current certificate of insurance and a financial statement, not just paying the fee.

    Renews every
2 years: a contractor license expires on the last day of the 24th month after it was issued or last renewed

Residential contractors (BC-A, BC-A/r and BC-A,b(sm)) first licensed on or after January 1, 2009 need 8 hours of Board-approved residential CE in the two years before expiration, completed by one qualifying agent. No carryover
  • Tennessee Limited Licensed Electrician and Plumber Renewal

    Last reviewed October 2026

The Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors issues the Limited Licensed Electrician (LLE) and Limited Licensed Plumber (LLP) licenses to individuals who pass the trade exam. The board's pages say they're only required in a municipality that uses the Division of Fire Prevention for permits or inspections, and cover work under $25,000 per project. Both run two years, expiring on the last day of the month they were issued, and renew in CORE for $50 with no continuing education. The board's renewal page gives each a 3-month grace period with a late fee.

    Renews every
Two years. An LLE or LLP license expires on the last day of the month it was issued, every two years: check the expiration date on yours
    Continuing education
None. The board's CE rule covers only residential contractor licenses (BC-A, BC-A/r and BC-A,b(sm)), and the LLE and LLP renewal asks only for the application and the fee
