  • Minnesota Electrician License Renewal (DLI)

    Last reviewed October 2026

Minnesota journeyworker and master electrician licenses renew every two years through DLI's iMS system, with 16 hours of DLI-approved CE, at least 12 of them on the National Electrical Code, earned during the license term. Master licenses all expire at the end of February in odd-numbered years and contractor licenses at the end of February in even-numbered years, so the two never come due together.

    Journeyworker electrician
Expires every two years: DLI dates it to the end of the month in which the license was originally issued. Go by the expiration date on your license in iMS
    Master electrician
Expires on the last day of February of each odd-numbered year
    Electrical contractor
Expires on the last day of February of each even-numbered year
    Continuing education
16 hours of DLI-approved CE for journeyworker and master electricians, at least 12 of them on the National Electrical Code; the rest can be on Minnesota's electrical laws and rules or related technical subjects
  • Minnesota Plumber License Renewal (DLI)

    Last reviewed October 2026

Minnesota master and journeyworker plumber licenses, and plumbing contractor licenses, are two-year licenses that expire on December 31 and renew through DLI's iMS system. Journeyworker and contractor licenses expire in odd-numbered years; the statute and Minn. R. 4716.0040 put master plumber licenses in even-numbered years. Plumbers need 16 hours of approved CE each license period, at least 8 of them on the State Plumbing Code, and DLI must receive the complete renewal by the expiration date.

    License term
Renewed master and journeyworker plumber licenses are two-year licenses
    Continuing education
16 hours of approved CE in each two-year license period for master and journeyworker plumbers (restricted plumbers too). At least 8 hours must be on the State Plumbing Code; the other 8 can be on the Plumbing Code, technical topics related to plumbing installations and equipment, the Minnesota State Building Code or the Minnesota Statutes governing plumbing work. Hours can be taken online
  • Minnesota Residential Contractor License Renewal (DLI)

    Last reviewed October 2026

Minnesota residential building contractor and residential remodeler licenses are two-year business licenses issued by the Department of Labor and Industry (DLI). They expire on March 31, some in odd-numbered years and some in even-numbered years, and renew online in iMS for $505 to $705, depending on gross annual receipts. A renewal DLI receives complete by March 1 is timely. Before the license can renew, its qualifying person's Q registration must be active (14 hours of approved CE every two years), and DLI needs current liability insurance and workers' compensation information and an active Secretary of State filing, if your business needs one.

    Expires
On March 31, every two years. Some licenses expire in odd-numbered years and others in even-numbered years: check the expiration date on your own license with DLI's license lookup
    Continuing education
The QP needs 14 hours of DLI-approved CE every two years, including at least one hour on energy codes and one on business management strategies for residential construction. The Q registration renews automatically once the hours are complete. Credit for the same course can't be counted twice in one licensing period
