City of St. Louis Plumber and Drainlayer License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026
The City of St. Louis licenses its own master plumbers, master drainlayers and journeyman plumbers under the city's Plumbing Code (Ordinance 71644, the 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code as the city amended it). Every one of those licenses comes due on the same date: December 31, 2023 and every three years after, which makes the next one December 31, 2026. You can file from September 1 before it. Renewing after the license expires adds a $100 processing fee, a renewal sent more than one month after expiration means retaking the exam, and a master who doesn't renew within the grace period loses the license and the permits and unfinished jobs that go with it.
- Renews every
- 3 years, all on one date: the code makes every Master Plumber, Master Drainlayer and Journeyman Plumber license due December 31, 2023, and every three years thereafter (so December 31, 2026, then December 31, 2029). A new license issued more than 30 days before the renewal date expires on that renewal date, with its fee prorated
- Continuing education
- Holders of active licenses submit verification that they attended continuing education courses, seminars, films or other training approved by the Board of Plumbing Examiners. The minimums the code prints with it (after the matching paragraph for the Board of Sprinkler Fitter Examiners) are 12 PEU (Professional Education Units) per three-year license cycle, pro-rated on a yearly base, for masters and contractors and for journeyman licensees, with a carryover of up to 4 PEU over the requirement to the next cycle. Confirm the hours your license needs with the Plumbing Section
City of St. Louis Electrical Contractor License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026
The City of St. Louis licenses its own electrical contractors, communications contractors, limited elevator electrical contractors and industrial-maintenance electricians through the Committee of Electrical Examiners, under the city's Electrical Code (Ordinance 70802, the 2017 National Electrical Code as the city amended it). Each of those licenses is renewed every year for $150. Electrical and industrial-maintenance license holders also show proof of at least 0.8 CEUs or 8 classroom hours of continuing education (or the equivalent) on the changes in the current Electrical Code when they renew. Electrical, limited elevator and communications contractors: keep the $25,000 bond from lapsing, because the code says a lapse means re-applying and testing again.
- Renews every
- Year: the code says each holder of an Electrical Contractor, Communications Contractor, Limited Elevator Electrical Contractor or Industrial-Maintenance Electrician license renews it annually. Ordinance 70802 doesn't name the renewal date, so go by your license and confirm it with the Electrical Section
- Continuing education
- Electrical or Industrial-Maintenance License holders provide proof of continuing education, or the equivalent, on the changes in the current adopted Electrical Code at the time of renewal: a minimum of 0.8 CEUs or 8 classroom hours. The code doesn't define which licenses "Electrical License" covers (the limited elevator electrical contractor license may be one) and names no hours for communications contractors; ask the Electrical Section whether yours needs CE
City of St. Louis Mechanical and HVAC License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026
The City of St. Louis licenses its own mechanical contractors, sheet metal contractors and HVAC servicer-installer contractors, and pipefitter, sheet metal and HVAC servicer-installer journeymen, under the city's Mechanical Code (Ordinance 70800, the 2018 International Mechanical Code as the city amended it). Contractor and journeyman licenses run three years (a first license matched to a St. Louis County license runs for the rest of that license's term): $100 for a contractor, $45 for a journeyman. Journeymen show proof of 12 professional education units (24 hours) when they renew, and contractors file a certificate of $1,000,000 liability insurance with the Mechanical Section by January 15 every year, or they get no permits.
- Renews every
- 3 years for contractor and journeyman licenses: the code's Table 112.8 sets each fee for a 3-year license, and a contractor's license is valid for three years from the date of issue. The table lists the apprentice license's fee without a term; ask the Mechanical Section how long yours runs
- Continuing education
- Licensed journeymen seeking renewal furnish proof of twelve professional education units (24 hours) received within the last three years on the current Mechanical Code or accepted practices in work it covers, or equivalent proof the Board approves, at the time of renewal. Up to four units (8 hours) over the requirement can carry over to the next license cycle, and units completed under the St. Louis County Mechanical Code count. The code's CE rule names journeymen only
