Oklahoma HVAC (Mechanical) License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
Oklahoma HVAC/R, refrigeration, sheet metal and other mechanical licenses are issued by the Construction Industries Board (CIB) and last no more than a year: every license expires on the last day of the licensee's birth month. A late fee applies after 30 days, and most journeymen and contractors need six hours of approved continuing education in the 36 months before it expires to renew. An active contractor also keeps a $5,000 bond and $50,000 of liability insurance on file, and the license goes inactive if the insurance lapses.
At a glance
- Who needs it
- Mechanical journeymen and contractors. Contractor licenses include HVAC/R Unlimited, HVAC/R Limited (cooling up to 25 tons, heating up to 500,000 Btu/h per appliance), Refrigeration, Natural Gas Piping, Process Piping, Sheet Metal and Ground Source Piping
- Renews every
- Year: a license lasts no more than one year and expires on the last day of your birth month
- Renew
- Mail or deliver the CIB's renewal application with a check or money order on or before the expiration date, or pay through the CIB's online payment portal and still send in the application. The renewal takes effect when the CIB issues notice of it
- Fee
- $200 for a contractor (active or inactive), $75 for a journeyman
- Late renewal
- A late fee applies after 30 days from expiration: $300 in total for a contractor, $100 for a journeyman. An expired license is reinstated with the renewal fee, the late fee (after 30 days), the renewal application and proof of meeting every renewal requirement
- Continuing education
- 6 hours every 36 months: no journeyman or contractor license is renewed without 6 hours of committee-approved CE in the 36 months before the license expires. You're exempt for 3 years from the date you passed your current licensing exam
- Bond
- Active contractors: a continuous $5,000 corporate surety bond payable to the Construction Industries Board, in the license holder's name, with 30 days' cancellation notice
- Insurance
- Active contractors: at least $50,000 of commercial general liability insurance, with the Construction Industries Board listed as certificate holder. Letting it lapse makes the license inactive, and each new or renewed policy has to be reported to the CIB
- Inactive contractor
- Same renewal fee as an active contractor, but no bond or insurance; you can work as a journeyman but not as an active contractor
- Fines
- A license can't be renewed until any outstanding CIB fines are paid
The CIB's 2027 rule notice says Senate Bill 1732 raises its fees from July 1, 2028, with a contractor renewal going from $200 to $320. Check the fee on the renewal form before you pay.
Show your license number with the OK prefix on all advertising, contracts and bids, and on both sides of each vehicle in letters at least 2 inches high, with your firm name.
Only CE approved by the CIB's industry committee counts: courses from another state agency count only once the committee approves them.
How to renew
- Check your birth month: that's when your license expires, on the last day of the month.
- Finish 6 hours of CE approved by the CIB's mechanical committee within the 36 months before expiration, unless you passed your current licensing exam less than 3 years ago.
- Contractors: make sure your $5,000 bond and $50,000 liability policy are current and that the CIB has your latest insurance certificate.
- Send the renewal application with $200 (contractor) or $75 (journeyman) on or before the expiration date. Paying online? Still send the application. After 30 days the late fee applies.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your general liability policy: the license goes inactive if it lapses, and each renewal has to be reported to the CIB
- Your $5,000 contractor bond: it's continuous, but it can be cancelled on 30 days' notice to the CIB
- Your apprentices' registrations, renewed every year
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
