North Carolina Refrigeration Contractor License Renewal

Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read

The North Carolina State Board of Refrigeration Contractors licenses, with some exemptions, anyone in the business of installing, servicing or repairing commercial, industrial or transport refrigeration. Comfort cooling is outside its license: heating and air conditioning licenses come from a different board. The license renews every year: the renewal application and the $80 fee are due on or before January 1, and the law says failing to renew forfeits your right to engage in the refrigeration business. The board may reinstate a lapsed license for the $120 reinstatement fee, but after two years without renewing you take the exam again. There's no continuing education to finish first.

At a glance

Renews every
Every year. The renewal application and fee are due to the board on or before January 1, and the board issues a renewal certificate for the current year
Who needs the license
Anyone who installs, repairs or maintains commercial, transport or industrial refrigeration equipment in North Carolina must be licensed or be supervised by someone who is. The board issues four classes: Class I (commercial), Class II (industrial, using ammonia as the refrigerant), Class III (refrigeration service) and Class IV (transport)
Not covered
Selling, repairing and installing comfort cooling devices or systems: heating and air conditioning licenses come from the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors. Also exempt: installing self-contained commercial units with a factory (OEM) molded plug that don't require opening service valves, installing or servicing self-contained household refrigeration appliances with a factory (OEM) molded plug, connected to suitable, permanently installed receptacles, that don't require opening service valves, replacing lamps, fuses and door gaskets, and a business that isn't in refrigeration contracting installing, maintaining and servicing its own equipment
Fee
$80 to renew a license
Continuing education
None. The law allows the board to require CE before renewal, but the board's rules and pages don't set any
Renewal notices
The board sends renewal notices on or about October 31 each year, and 2026 renewals could be done online
Missed renewal
The law says failing to renew the license each year automatically forfeits your right to engage in the refrigeration business. On or about January 15 the board writes to licensees who haven't renewed that their license has lapsed, and on or about February 1 sends those who haven't replied a certified letter that it's unlawful to keep doing refrigeration contracting
Reinstatement
The board may reinstate a lapsed license on payment of the $120 reinstatement fee with the application for renewal
Two years without renewing
If you don't renew for two consecutive years, you must take and pass the exam again to get a new license
Your license and your company
Licenses are issued to individuals only. You can add your company name to your license, and if you're your company's qualifying person you must. Business is done in the exact name on the license, and you can't let anyone else use it
On your paperwork
Post your current license at your business location, and put its number on all proposals, contracts and requests for permits issued by municipalities
Change of address
Tell the board in writing within 30 days of any change of address or business location

Comfort cooling is outside the refrigeration license: heating and air conditioning licenses come from the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors. See the North Carolina plumbing and HVAC guide.

If your license has lapsed, contact the board before doing more refrigeration work: the law says failing to renew forfeits the right to do it, and the board's certified letter, sent on or about February 1, says further refrigeration contracting is unlawful.

How to renew

  1. Watch for the board's renewal notice, sent on or about October 31.
  2. Renew online through the Contractor Login on the board's website once renewals open (the board announced on October 29, 2025 that 2026 renewals could be done online).
  3. Pay the $80 renewal fee so the board has your renewal on or before January 1.
  4. Post the new certificate at your business location, and keep your license number on proposals, contracts and municipal permit requests.

Put this renewal in your calendar

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • General liability insurance policy
  • Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
