North Carolina Plumbing & HVAC License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 3 min read
Every license from North Carolina's State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating & Fire Sprinkler Contractors expires on December 31, and there is no grace period: from January 1 you can't bid, contract, supervise or install until it's renewed. Renewal opens around October 1, there's no continuing education to finish first, and renewing late adds a $25 processing fee.
At a glance
- Who needs the license
- Any person or firm in the business of plumbing, heating (heating group 1, 2 or 3) or fire sprinkler contracting: doing, or offering to do, the work for pay, including installing or replacing condensing units, air handlers, gas furnaces, package units, boilers and water heaters. A licensed firm's W-2 employees can do the work under its listed qualified individual. Drain cleaning and minor repairs to an installed plumbing or heating system don't need a license
- Expires
- December 31 of every year: licenses renew annually
- Grace period
- None. From January 1, everything that needs the license (bidding, contracting, supervising, installing) must stop until it's renewed
- Renewal opens
- 90 days before expiration, usually on October 1. The board mails renewal invoices around then, and emails them if it has your address; you're still responsible for renewing if one doesn't arrive
- Renewal fee
- $150 a year for a plumbing, heating, fuel piping or fire sprinkler contractor license, and $75 for each additional qualifying individual listed on a business's plumbing, heating or fuel piping license
- Late renewal
- A $25 processing fee for late renewal
- How to renew
- Online with a major credit card (a convenience fee applies; don't use a debit card), or mail the renewal invoice or printed form with a check or money order. Renew online and you print your own license certificate
- Continuing education
- None: the board eliminated mandatory CE as a condition of renewal on December 31, 2012
- Expired up to 3 years
- It can still be renewed, with the back fees and late fees
- Expired more than 3 years
- It can't be renewed: you'd have to pass the licensing exams again
The board's license renewal page lists which past years' expired licenses can still be renewed online, and until when.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Each other license class you hold with the board (plumbing, heating and fire sprinkler licenses all expire December 31)
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
