Connecticut Plumbing License Renewal
Last reviewed November 2026 · 6 min read
Every Connecticut plumbing and pipefitting license from the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) expires each year on October 31, and renewing online costs $150 for a contractor and $120 for a journeyperson. Missed October 31? An expired license can be reinstated if the reinstatement form and fees are submitted to DCP no later than three years after it expired. File online at elicense.ct.gov or on DCP's paper form, with your required CE finished first. If you didn't work under the license in Connecticut while it was expired, the fee is the same $150 or $120; if you did, it's $165 or $132 for each year you worked, up to three years. After three years you reapply and retest. Continuing education runs in two-year windows that end July 31, three months before the renewal deadline: contractors finish theirs in even-numbered years, journeypersons in odd-numbered years.
At a glance

- Year. All plumbing and pipefitting licenses expire annually on October 31

- Fee
- $150 for a contractor license and $120 for a journeyperson license, every year
- Renewal notice
- DCP sends renewal notices about 30 to 45 days before the expiration date, to the email address on file (by regular mail if it has none)
- CE window
- Contractors complete their CE between August 1 of an even-numbered year and July 31 of the even-numbered year two years later. Journeypersons complete theirs between August 1 of an odd-numbered year and July 31 of the odd-numbered year two years later. Either way it's due 3 months before the renewal deadline
- CE hours
- 5 credit hours every two years for limited contractors and unlimited journeypersons, and 3 for limited journeypersons. P-6, P-7, PP-1 and PP-2 holders have no CE to take: no courses are offered for them at this time
- Unlimited contractors

- First renewal
- CE is not required before your first renewal
- Approved courses
- Courses must be approved by the Connecticut Plumbing Board and apply to your license type. Online courses count only if taught live, with real-time video and audio
- Proof of CE
- You attest to finishing your CE when you renew. Keep your certificates for at least four years in case DCP audits you
- Renew
- Online through DCP's renewal website, with your User ID and password or the Fast Track Renewal PIN in your renewal notice. No notice? Email dcp.online@ct.gov with your name, license type, license number and email address to ask for a User ID and password or a Fast Track Renewal PIN (DCP can't take credit cards or give out a User ID and password over the phone), or email dcp.licenseservices@ct.gov with the same details to renew by mail
- Missing CE
- Failing to complete the required CE can bring civil fines and the suspension or revocation of your license
- Reinstatement
- An expired license can be reinstated if the reinstatement form and fees are submitted no later than three years after it expired. Finish the required CE first. Reinstatement brings the license to the current renewal year
- How to reinstate
- Online at elicense.ct.gov with your User ID and password (ask dcp.online@ct.gov for them with your name, license type, license number and email address), or by mail: send DCP's plumbing contractor or journeyperson reinstatement form, your CE certificates and a check or money order payable to "Treasurer, State of Connecticut" to DCP License Services Division, 450 Columbus Blvd, Ste 801, Hartford, CT 06103. Fees aren't refundable. Questions: dcp.occpro@ct.gov
- Reinstatement fee
- $150 for a contractor or $120 for a journeyperson if you didn't work under the license in Connecticut while it was expired. If you did, $165 ($150 plus a $15 late fee) or $132 ($120 plus a $12 late fee) for each year you worked, up to three years
- After three years
- A license expired for more than three years can't be reinstated: you must reapply and retest
If a health or other personal hardship keeps you from finishing CE, DCP may consider an exception: request a hardship waiver in writing, with an explanation and proof of the hardship (its plumber CE page links the request form). Losing income because your license was cancelled doesn't count as a hardship.
Only individuals can apply for Connecticut plumbing licenses: DCP doesn't accept company applications.
How to renew
- Check your CE window: contractors' ends July 31 of an even-numbered year, journeypersons' July 31 of an odd-numbered year.
- Finish your CE hours with a course approved for your license type before July 31 of that year, and keep the certificate.
- Watch for DCP's renewal notice, sent about 30 to 45 days before October 31 to the email address on file.
- Renew online with your User ID and password or the Fast Track Renewal PIN from the notice: $150 for a contractor, $120 for a journeyperson. Attest to your CE as part of the renewal.
- Missed October 31? Reinstate within three years (CE first), or you'll have to reapply and retest.

It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your CE hours for the two-year window, due July 31
- Your CE certificates, kept at least four years for audits
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
