Arkansas Contractor License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 6 min read
Arkansas commercial and residential contractor licenses from the Contractors Licensing Board are renewed every year, before the license's expiration date. The renewal application and fee can be done in the board's online portal, but commercial, residential builder and unlimited licenses also need financial information (a financial statement, a bond in lieu of one, or a balance sheet) and current proof of workers' compensation coverage if you have employees. A renewal is on time only if the board has the completed application, fee and financials by the expiration date; a commercial or residential builder renewal that's late costs $100 instead of $50. A license can be renewed up to two years after it expires, but not for the time it was expired.
At a glance
- Who needs a commercial license
- Anyone contracting work of $50,000 or more, including labor and materials, on a commercial project (any project that isn't a single-family residence)
- Who needs a residential license
- Work on a single-family residence of more than $2,000, including labor and materials: a residential builder license to build one (it also covers remodeling), a residential remodeler license for major structural changes or additions, a home improvement license for specialty work such as painting, windows or flooring
- Renews every
- Year. A license expires a year after it was issued (for a commercial license, the law says the day before the anniversary of its issue date) unless the board sets another date: the expiration date on your license is the one that counts
- Renewal notice
- Mailed about 60 days before your license expires. Not getting one doesn't excuse a late renewal: renewing on time is the license holder's responsibility
- On time means
- The board has your completed application (the renewal, the fee and any financial information) by the expiration date. If it does, you can keep using the license until the board's next meeting after that date
- Renewal fee
- Commercial license and residential builder license: $50 on time, $100 if late. Residential remodeler and residential specialty (home improvement) licenses: $25 on time (check the late amount with the board). A commercial subcontractor registration is $100 a year
- Renew
- Online in the board's Licensee Renewal Application portal (ark.org/aclb_olr). Enter your card's billing address exactly. Try only once: if you get an error or aren't sure it went through, wait at least 24 hours before calling to check. The portal can't take uploads: send the financial information and workers' comp proof to the email address on the board's Renew a License page, or fax them to 501-372-2247
- Commercial financials
- A current reviewed or audited financial statement with a signed CPA opinion, or a compiled financial statement for a restricted license (projects under $1,500,000), or a bond in lieu of the financial statement, which is in addition to the $10,000 surety bond a commercial license keeps on file
- Residential financials
- Residential builder, unlimited residential remodeler and unlimited home improvement licenses need a current balance sheet, which you can complete in the online portal. Limited licenses (projects under $50,000) need no financial statement
- Workers' comp
- The board requires proof of current workers' compensation coverage before renewing a contractor who is required to carry it (a certificate of coverage if you have employees), and can suspend or revoke a commercial license (a residential license is revoked) if the coverage, or the proof on file with the board, lapses
- If it expires
- Within 30 days after it expires, renew with the late fee and the license is reinstated until the board acts on it. More than 30 days late, the board may review it at its next available meeting, and you have no valid license until it's approved. Either way the license isn't reinstated for the time it was expired. A license can be renewed up to two years after its expiration date; past that, it can't simply be renewed: contact the board (501-372-4661)
- Inactive status
- You can choose inactive status at any renewal: you still pay the renewal fees but send no financial information, and you can't bid on or do work that needs a license until you reactivate
- Continuing education
- None. Neither the commercial nor the residential licensing law or rules set a CE requirement for renewal
A license expires about a year after its issue date, so there's no statewide renewal day: put the date printed on your license in your calendar.
A license held by a uniformed service member or their spouse who is deployed outside Arkansas doesn't expire until 180 days after they return to the state.
How to renew
- Check the expiration date on your license, and watch for the renewal notice about 60 days before it.
- Get your financial information ready: the financial statement or bond in lieu for a commercial license, the balance sheet for a residential builder or unlimited license.
- Renew in the board's online portal and pay the fee, once: if you're unsure it went through, wait 24 hours before calling.
- Send the financial statement and your current workers' comp certificate of coverage, if you have employees, to the email address on the board's Renew a License page or by fax to 501-372-2247.
- Make sure the board has everything by your expiration date, or the late fee applies.

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your Arkansas electrical, plumbing or HVACR licenses, which are issued separately
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
