Wisconsin HVAC Contractor and Qualifier Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 3 min read
The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) issues two HVAC contracting credentials: the HVAC Contractor registration, held by the business, and the HVAC Qualifier certification, held by a person. Both run four years and renew on the date they were issued, so each has its own date. Renewal is online in LicensE, costs $160 for the contractor and $60 for the qualifier, and needs no continuing education. A credential expired more than four years goes through DSPS's reinstatement application instead.
At a glance
- Renews every
- Four years. Both credentials renew on their date of issuance, not on one statewide date: check the expiration date on yours
- Two credentials
- The HVAC Contractor registration is an organization credential, held by the business in a LicensE organization account. The HVAC Qualifier certification is an individual credential, in a LicensE individual account. Hold both? You need a separate account for each
- Fee
- $160 to renew an HVAC Contractor registration and $60 to renew an HVAC Qualifier certification
- Continuing education
- None for either credential
- Renewal opens
- About 4 weeks before the credential expires. DSPS emails renewal instructions to the email address on file
- Renew
- In LicensE: log in, select "Renew My License", complete the application, upload any required documents and pay, by credit or debit card or ACH. An ACH payment can add 3 to 5 business days to processing
- Expired more than 4 years
- You apply through DSPS's Reinstatement After 4 Years application instead of renewing, and DSPS's renewal table lists a $200 reinstatement fee, if applicable. The qualifier's reinstatement application lists the HVAC qualifier exam and asks you to show again the experience or schooling that qualifies you for it; the contractor's says no exam is required
- Who applies for a new or reinstated contractor registration
- The owner of the contracting business, a partner applying for a partnership, or the chairman of the board or chief executive officer applying for a corporation
Expired less than four years? Ask DSPS what renewing late takes for your credential.
DSPS's credential pages direct you to LicensE (license.wi.gov) to apply, renew, update your contact information or check a credential.
How to renew
- Check the expiration date on each credential you hold: the business's HVAC Contractor registration and your HVAC Qualifier certification each renew four years from their own issue date.
- Make sure the email address on file in LicensE is current: DSPS sends renewal instructions about 4 weeks before a credential expires.
- Log in to LicensE (the organization account for the contractor registration, your individual account for the qualifier certification), select "Renew My License" and complete the application.
- Pay the fee, $160 for the contractor and $60 for the qualifier, before the expiration date. No continuing education is needed. Paying by ACH can add 3 to 5 business days.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- The other HVAC credential: the business's contractor registration and the qualifier's certification renew on their own dates
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
