New Jersey Home Improvement Contractor Registration Renewal

Last reviewed October 2026 · 5 min read

A New Jersey home improvement contractor business (HICB) registers with the Division of Consumer Affairs every year, and the registration must be renewed by March 31. Renewal is online only and costs $90. A late renewal from April 1 to April 30 costs $115; a registration still not renewed is changed to expired on or around May 1, and reinstating it costs $140. You must keep at least $500,000 per occurrence of general liability insurance, workers' compensation unless exempt, and the "additional security" (a bond, letter of credit or other security the Division accepts) the 2023 amendments added, renewals included. Without a current registration you can't sell or make home improvements.

At a glance

Who needs it
Any home improvement contractor business (HICB) making or selling home improvements on existing homes, or on commercial property being converted into homes, full or part time. Subcontractors and out-of-state businesses too. Building new homes isn't a home improvement under the Act
Not required
Among others: new home builders registered with the Department of Community Affairs, work on your own or your family's home, and a person licensed or regulated by a professional board with the Division or another State agency acting within the scope of their profession
Renews every
Year: registrations expire on March 31 and must be renewed by March 31 of each year. The Division emails reminder notices to the email address of record
Renewal window
Online only, from on or around January 15 until March 30, so renew by March 30. The Division doesn't accept paper renewal applications
Fee
$90 by March 31. $115 for a late renewal received April 1 to April 30 (an extra $25). $140 to reinstate after April 30. Fees are non-refundable
Late renewal and reinstatement
A late renewal is accepted April 1 to April 30 for $115. A registration still not renewed has its status changed to expired on or around May 1; after that you file a reinstatement application ($140)
Insurance
Keep, and file proof of, commercial general liability insurance of at least $500,000 per occurrence and workers' compensation insurance unless exempt by law. If a policy is cancelled or not renewed, file the replacement's certificate within 10 days
Additional security
A compliance bond, irrevocable letter of credit or other security the Division accepts, required of every HICB, renewals included. Minimum: $10,000 for contracts under $10,000 (or under $150,000 in the previous 12 months); $25,000 for contracts of $10,000 to $120,000 (or $150,000 to $750,000); $50,000 for a contract over $120,000 (or $750,000 or more in the previous 12 months)
Without a registration
An HICB that doesn't renew can't sell or make home improvements in New Jersey. Civil penalties run up to $10,000 for a first offense and up to $20,000 for each later one
Registration number
Display it in your place of business, in all advertisements, on business cards, on commercial vehicles and on all business documents. Jobs over $500 need a written contract

A 2023 law (P.L.2023, c.237) also creates individual home improvement contractor licenses from a new State Board of Home Improvement and Home Elevation Contractors, renewed every two years with at least six hours of continuing education. Neither the individual license requirement nor the rule that most registered businesses employ a licensed contractor applies until the first day of the sixth month after that Board adopts its rules: check the Division's site for when it starts.

Home elevation work needs a separate home elevation contractor business registration.

How to renew

  1. Watch for the Division's reminder email, and check your status with the call center if you're unsure.
  2. Check your general liability (at least $500,000 per occurrence), workers' compensation and additional security are current, and the security's amount still fits your contract sizes.
  3. Renew online from on or around January 15 until March 30, and pay the $90 fee.
  4. Missed it? A late renewal is accepted until April 30 for $115. On or around May 1 an unrenewed registration is changed to expired, and you file a reinstatement application ($140). Without a renewed registration you can't sell or make home improvements.

Put this renewal in your calendar

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • Your additional security (compliance bond or letter of credit)
  • Your workers' compensation policy, unless you're exempt
  • Your general liability policy: the Division needs a replacement certificate within 10 days if it's cancelled or not renewed
  • Your trade licenses, if you also hold an electrical, plumbing or HVACR license
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
