Iowa Contractor Registration Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
Iowa requires construction contractors who earn at least $2,000 a year from construction to register with the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL). DIAL's FAQ says the registration must be renewed every year, and a renewal form is sent by mail or email the month before it expires. The fee is $50, and you need an Iowa unemployment insurance number and your workers' compensation paperwork. Out-of-state contractors also need a $25,000 bond, or a letter showing they're prequalified to bid on Iowa DOT projects. Plumbing and mechanical contractors register through the Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board's license instead.

- Every year. DIAL's FAQ says your registration must be renewed every year, and a renewal form is sent by mail or email the month before it expires
- Who must register
- Individual and business contractors doing construction work in Iowa who earn at least $2,000 a year from construction. Those earning less, or working only on their own property, don't have to register. DIAL says carpenters, electricians, plumbers, roofers, painters and many others must register
- Subcontractors
- Must register themselves: they aren't covered by the general contractor's registration
- Plumbing and mechanical contractors
- A business doing plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal or hydronic work gets its contractor registration through the Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board's joint application with its contractor license, not through DIAL's contractor registration
- Fee
- $50 a year, non-refundable. A self-employed contractor who doesn't pay more than $2,000 a year to employ others, doesn't work with or for other contractors in the same phases of construction, and isn't an LLC, corporation or partnership can send DIAL's notarized fee exemption form instead
- Unemployment insurance
- You need an Iowa unemployment insurance account number to register, even with no employees
- Workers' compensation
- A certificate of insurance listing DIAL as a certificate holder, a self-insurance release, or a statement that you aren't required to carry coverage. The rules ask you to notify DIAL of changes to your workers' compensation coverage within ten days prior to the change
- Out-of-state bond
- A contractor whose principal place of business is outside Iowa files a $25,000 surety bond on DIAL's bond form, or a letter showing it's prequalified to bid on Iowa DOT projects. The bond is continuous until cancelled, so renewals don't file it again
- How to renew
- Online through DIAL's registration portal, or by mail on the New Application/Renewal form marked "renewal" with your current registration number. DIAL doesn't process applications in person or take registrations or credit cards over the phone
- Registration number
- Renew on time and you keep the same registration number. If a sole proprietorship or partnership incorporates, it applies again as a new business and gets a new number
- Report changes
- Report a change to the information on your registration to DIAL within 15 working days
- Penalties
- Up to $500 for a first violation, such as working unregistered, and up to $5,000 for each later one
DIAL says you may also need to register as an electrician with DIAL, or as a plumber with the Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board. See the Iowa electrician and plumbing and mechanical guides.
Cities and counties can have their own requirements: DIAL says to contact the city or county government for each project.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your Iowa electrician license, or your plumbing and mechanical license, if you hold one
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
