Louisiana Contractor License Renewal (LSLBC)
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
A Louisiana contractor license expires on the anniversary of the date it was first issued. You renew online through LSLBC's contractor portal, starting no earlier than 60 days before expiration. Residential building contractors also owe six hours of CE every year, and residential, mold remediation and home improvement licensees must show current insurance at every renewal.
At a glance
- Expires
- On the anniversary of the date the license was originally issued. The first license certificate is valid for one year
- Renewal term
- LSLBC's renewal form offers one-, two- or three-year terms, but state law excludes licenses that depend on insurance requirements or certifications from multiple-year terms: check with LSLBC which terms your license can take
- Renewal window
- Opens 60 days before expiration: you can't renew earlier
- Renewal notices
- LSLBC sends them to the address on file (by email, says its renewal page) about 60 days and again 15 days before the license expires
- Renew
- Online through the LSLBC contractor portal, following the instructions on the renewal notice
- Continuing education
- Residential building contractors: at least 6 hours every year from a board-approved provider, with the certificate kept for five years. Holding a current commercial license in building construction, highway, street and bridge, heavy, or municipal and public works construction meets the requirement. Commercial and mold remediation contractors and home improvement registrants have no CE
- Insurance
- Residential, mold remediation and home improvement licensees keep general liability and workers' compensation coverage in force the whole time and give LSLBC current insurance certificates at every renewal. The insurance agent sends the certificate
- Fee
- Set by the board; state law caps the renewal fee at $100. The renewal form also carries a $100-a-year fee for construction education programs that you can choose not to pay
- Grace period
- 15 days after the expiration date to file the renewal without a penalty. After that, a delinquent fee of up to $50
- After one year
- A license not renewed within one year of its expiration can't be renewed: you apply for a new license. You won't retake the trade exams if the new application has the same qualifying party and classifications
Licenses or classifications issued on the strength of another certification or credential expire when that credential does.
A master plumber licensed by the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana also needs a commercial plumbing license from LSLBC for plumbing work valued at $10,000 or more, labor and materials included.
How to renew
- Watch for LSLBC's renewal notice email 60 days before expiration: it has the user id and password for the contractor portal.
- Residential building contractors: finish at least 6 hours of CE with a board-approved provider and keep the certificate.
- Residential, mold remediation and home improvement: have your insurance agent send LSLBC current general liability and workers' comp certificates.
- Renew online through the contractor portal and pay the fee.
- File before the expiration date: the license becomes invalid at the end of its term unless renewed, and after 15 days a delinquent fee applies.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your qualifying party: every classification on the license needs one, and if yours leaves you have 30 days to tell LSLBC and 60 days to qualify another
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
