California Contractor License Renewal (CSLB)

Last reviewed October 2026 · 3 min read

Every active CSLB license (general building "B", plumbing C-36, HVAC C-20, electrical C-10 and the other classifications) renews every two years; inactive licenses, every four. There's no continuing education requirement, which makes it easy to forget until the expiration date has already passed.

Renews every
2 years (active license)
Renewal application
CSLB sends one about 60 days before expiration, but renewing on time is your responsibility even if it never arrives
No application yet?
If it hasn't arrived 45 days before expiration, order one online or by calling CSLB at 1-800-321-CSLB (2752)
Continuing education
None required for a standard contractor license
Fee
On time, every two years: $450 for a sole owner and $700 for any other entity (LLC, corporation, partnership), or $470 and $720 for a C-10 electrical license. An inactive renewal (every four years) is $300 (sole owner) or $500 (other entities)
Late (delinquent) renewal
Renewed after it expires, you pay the delinquent fee: $675 for a sole owner or $1,050 for other entities ($695 or $1,070 for C-10) when renewing active, $450 or $750 inactive
Time limit
An expired license can be renewed any time within five years of its expiration. After that, you apply for an original license again
Workers' comp
Every active renewal recertifies workers' compensation: proof of current coverage if you have employees, or that you're still exempt. C-8, C-20, C-22, C-39 and C-61/D-49 contractors must carry it even with no employees. Without it, the license isn't renewed
Inactive license
Renewing inactive means no bond, workers' comp or qualifier, but you can't contract. Going active again takes an Application for Reactivation and its fee
Renew
Online through CSLB if the license has a single qualifier; licenses with multiple qualifiers mail or hand-deliver a paper renewal form
Deadline
Renew before the expiration date: you can't contract with an expired license

How to renew

  1. Look up your license on CSLB's site and note the exact expiration date.
  2. Confirm your contractor bond and workers' comp (or exemption) are current: CSLB checks both, an active renewal recertifies workers' comp, and they renew on their own dates.
  3. Renew online or mail the renewal form well before expiration: CSLB's processing times vary.
  4. Keep working only once CSLB shows the license as active: contracting on an expired license is a violation.

Put this renewal in your calendar

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • Contractor license bond
  • General liability insurance policy
  • Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
