New Mexico Contractor License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 5 min read
New Mexico's Construction Industries Division (CID) licenses general, electrical and mechanical contractors, and PSI handles every CID renewal. A license not renewed by the last working day before it expires is suspended by law; renew it within three months, with a late fee, or it is cancelled. Each renewal needs a $10,000 license bond, and most journeyman certificates also need 16 hours of continuing education.
At a glance
- Renews every
- Two years from the date it was issued, under the Construction Industries Licensing Act, unless CID sets another term (never less than one year). Go by the expiration date on your license
- Renewal notice
- CID or its designee mails a renewal application to your address of record at least 30 days before the license expires. Renewing on time is your responsibility whether or not it arrives
- Renew
- Through PSI, which handles all CID renewals and licensing paperwork. Every current qualifying party on the license must sign the renewal form. A mailed renewal counts as filed on its postmark date (hand delivered, the day it's received)
- Bond
- A $10,000 license bond from a corporate surety authorized to do business in New Mexico is a condition of every renewal, and it must cover the whole license period
- Workers' compensation
- CID requires coverage for every licensed entity. Failing to comply with the workers' compensation laws can make a license invalid
- Business authorization
- A corporation, LLC, partnership or sole proprietorship must be legally authorized to do business in New Mexico to renew or keep its license
- Continuing education
- CID's continuing education page lists none for contractor licenses (its General Building Bureau has no CE requirement for contractors). Most journeyman certificates need it: see below
- Journeyman certificates
- Expire on a date CID sets, no more than three years from the month of issuance; renew before the last working day before yours expires. Journeyman electricians (EE-98J), linemen (EL-1J) and plumbing, mechanical and fire suppression journeymen (JP, JPF, JG, JPG, JMG, JSM, JS, JR, MS-12J and MS-14J) need at least 16 hours of approved CE, at least 8 of them on the current code, completed within the three years before renewing, with proof sent with the renewal. Other journeyman classes, such as ER-1J residential wiring, the ES specialties, welders (JW) and boiler operators, aren't on the rule's CE list
- Not renewed in time
- A contractor license not renewed by the last working day before it expires is suspended by operation of law
- Late renewal
- A suspended license can be renewed within three months of expiring. The late fee is $1 for each day since it expired, up to 30 days, and after that twice the renewal fee. Not renewed within three months, it is cancelled
- Expired journeyman certificate
- Renewable without an exam within six months, at twice the renewal fee. After six months it is cancelled
- Qualifying parties
- A qualifying party certificate that hasn't qualified a valid license for two years in a row expires; getting it back means applying, paying the fees and normally testing again
PSI handles CID renewals and licensing paperwork; permits and inspections stay with the Regulation and Licensing Department.
LP gas licenses are renewed every year, unlike mechanical licenses, and CID leaves keeping track of the date to the licensee.
How to renew
- Check the expiration date on your license and watch for the renewal application, mailed at least 30 days before.
- Make sure your $10,000 license bond runs through the next license period, your workers' compensation coverage is in force and your business is still authorized to do business in New Mexico.
- Have every current qualifying party sign the renewal form, then renew through PSI by the last working day before the license expires.
- Journeymen in a CE class (EE-98J, EL-1J, and plumbing, mechanical and fire suppression): finish 16 hours of approved CE, at least 8 on the current code, and send the proof with your certificate renewal.
- Missed it? The license is suspended. Renew it within three months of expiring, with the late fee, or it is cancelled.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- Your $10,000 license bond (it must cover the whole license period)
- Your journeyman certificates (and their CE hours, where your class needs them)
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
