Maine Plumber License Renewal
Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read
Maine Plumbers' Examining Board licenses for master, journeyman and trainee plumbers expire two years after the date they were issued, so each license has its own date. Renewal is online only: $200 for a master or journeyman and $100 for a trainee. Renew up to 90 days late with a $50 late fee; a master or journeyman who is 90 days to 2 years late can still reinstate without retaking the exam. The journeyman-in-training license runs a single four years and can't be renewed.

- Renews every
- Two years. Master, journeyman and trainee plumber licenses expire 2 years after the date they were issued: go by the expiration date on your own license
- Fee
- $200 to renew a master or journeyman plumber license and $100 to renew a trainee plumber license, every two years
- Journeyman-in-training
- A single four-year license that can't be renewed and is issued only once to any person
- Renew
- Online only. Since January 1, 2024 the board requires its online system for renewals, and renewals sent by fax, mail or email aren't processed. Submitting the renewal online isn't an automatic renewal: the department must verify you've met every condition first
- Renewal reminder
- The board's renewal packet says a courtesy reminder is emailed about 60 days before your license expires and online renewal opens 60 days before. Not getting the reminder doesn't change your responsibility to renew on time, so keep your email address current
- Your license
- The board doesn't print licenses: the renewed license is emailed to you from noreply@maine.gov
- Up to 90 days late
- A $50 late fee on top of the renewal fee
- 90 days to 2 years late
- A master or journeyman plumber can reinstate the license without taking the exam by filing a new renewal application and paying the $200 license fee and a $100 penalty fee
- More than 90 days late (trainee)
- A trainee plumber who renews more than 90 days after expiration is subject to all the requirements for new applicants
- 2 years or more late
- A master or journeyman plumber applies for a new license, meets the qualifications in effect at the time and passes the exam again, unless the board waives it
- Report changes
- Changes to your name, address or email address, criminal convictions, disciplinary actions and any material change to what you gave on your original application must be reported to the board within 10 days
Your license must be displayed at your principal place of business, if you have one, and the pocket card carried on you and shown on request.
The board's licensing pages list no continuing education for renewal: the renewal application and fee are what it asks for.
How to renew
- Check the expiration date on your license: it expires two years after the date it was issued.
- Make sure the board has your current email address: the renewal reminder and the renewed license both come by email.
- Renew online once renewal opens (about 60 days before the expiration date, the renewal packet says) and pay $200 (master or journeyman) or $100 (trainee). Paper renewals aren't processed.
- Watch for the renewal to be verified and the license emailed to you: submitting the application doesn't renew the license by itself.

The license isn't the only thing expiring
Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:
- If you supervise trainee plumbers, their licenses, each on its own two-year date
- A journeyman-in-training's four-year license, which can't be renewed
- General liability insurance policy
- Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
- Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
- Commercial auto insurance
LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
