Indiana Plumbing License Renewal

Last reviewed October 2026 · 4 min read

Indiana's journeyman plumber, plumbing contractor and plumbing corporation licenses, issued by the Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) for the Indiana Plumbing Commission, all expire on December 31 of every odd-numbered year, so the current ones expire December 31, 2027. Renewing costs $30 for a journeyman and $100 for a contractor or corporation. A renewal received after December 31 adds a late fee, which goes up from March 1 of the even year, and a journeyman or contractor license expired three years or more has to be reinstated, with a personal appearance before the Commission.

Expired three years or more
A journeyman or contractor license must be reinstated before you practice: apply online, pay the current renewal fee and the current application fee ($60 in all for a journeyman, $150 for a contractor), upload a letter of work history or a resume covering any work since the license expired, and make a personal appearance before the Commission
Continuing education
None listed: the PLA's plumbing renewal instructions ask for no continuing education

A corporation in the plumbing contracting business must itself be licensed as a plumbing contractor, and applying for that corporate license takes an Indiana plumbing contractor license.

A new license's issuance fee depends on the year it is issued: $30 for a journeyman license issued in an even year, $15 in an odd year; $100 for a contractor license issued in an even year, $50 in an odd year. The PLA lists them separately from the $30 (journeyman) or $50 (contractor) application fee.

Missed the December 31, 2025 deadline? A renewal received now, in 2026, is past March 1 of the even year: $130 in all for a journeyman, $300 for a contractor or corporation.

A plumbing corporation license expired three years or more is reinstated online with its license number and registration code, for a $200 fee.

Plumbing apprenticeship programs expire on July 31 every year.

How to renew

  1. Watch for the renewal notice about 90 days before December 31 of the odd year, and make sure the PLA has your current email address.
  2. Renew online through the PLA's Renew My License service: $30 for a journeyman plumber, $100 for a plumbing contractor or plumbing corporation.
  3. Renewing a plumbing corporation? Confirm the responsible licensed plumbing contractor on file with the license.

Put this renewal in your calendar

Know your expiration date? Download a free calendar file with reminders before it, no sign-up needed. It's made in your browser: nothing you type is sent to us (your browser keeps it only if you follow the sign-up link, for your new ledger). A Google Calendar button sends just that one event to Google.

Remind me before it expires

The expiration day itself is always in the file. Reminders whose day has already passed are left out.

The file covers one date: once you renew, make a new one. How to add it to your calendar

The license isn't the only thing expiring

Most lapses that cost contractors work aren't the license itself. They're one of these, renewing on a different date:

  • Your apprentices' licenses (October 1 of even-numbered years)
  • Your plumbing corporation license, if your business has one (the same December 31)
  • General liability insurance policy
  • Workers' compensation policy (or exemption)
  • Certificates of insurance (COIs) you've given to clients and GCs
  • Commercial auto insurance

LicenseLedger keeps every one of those dates in one place and emails you before each one expires, with reminders far enough ahead to finish CE and paperwork.
